Australian authorities charged on Wednesday a 19-year-old man accused of issuing violent antisemitic threats toward a Jewish passenger during an international flight to Sydney.
Australian Federal Police officers arrested the suspect immediately after the aircraft landed at Sydney International Airport. The flight had departed from Bali, Indonesia.
Police said the accused directed threats and made hand gestures signaling violence. He knew the targeted individual was affiliated with the Jewish community. Investigators classified the incident as an antisemitic offense.
Charges Filed, Bail Denied
The suspect lives in Condell Park, a suburb in western Sydney. Prosecutors charged him under federal law with threatening force or violence against members of a protected group or their close associates. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
A court denied bail. Legal proceedings are now underway.
Authorities stressed that the incident appears isolated. The Australian Federal Police confirmed there is no current or imminent threat to the public.
