The “Antisemitism in Digital Media” forum was held in Tel Aviv last Monday, hosted and organized by the Instituto Cervantes, together with VEO Israel, Israel Leche y Miel, and the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM).

Instituto Cervantes de Tel Aviv, led by General Coordinator Francisco Javier Lรณpez Tapia, is committed to promoting dialogue and eradicating all forms of discrimination.

The forum’s keynote speaker was Pilar Rahola, chair of CAM’s new Advisory Board for Latin America. She was introduced by CAM Director of Hispanic Affairs Shay Salamon.

CAM Director of Hispanic Affairs Shay Salamon speaks at the “Antisemitism in Digital Media” forum, in Tel Aviv, Israel, March 15, 2024.

Rahola voiced her concern about the exponential rise of antisemitism in Latin America, offering a thorough analysis of the factors contributing to disturbing trend.

She also shared her insights on “fake news” about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that circulates on social media, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7th attack.

Rahola concluded her remarks by emphasizing the importance of her visit to Israel at this time and expressing gratitude to the Jewish people for their societal contributions and their perseverance over persecution throughout history.

More than 60 people attended the forum, including diplomats, journalists, social media influencers and advocates, Israelis of Latin American origin, and residents of the Gaza border area.

CAMโ€™s outreach in Latin America began nearly three years ago, and since then it has worked diligently to build meaningful partnerships and friendships with influential leaders, lawmakers, community organizations, and civil society activists from a diverse assortment of religious, political and cultural backgrounds in the region to combat antisemitism together.

During this time, CAM en Espaรฑol has emerged as a key player in the battle against Jew-hatred in Latin America, with a growing coalition engaged in impactful activities in countries including Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Panama, and Guatemala, among others.

CAM en Espaรฑol has organized regional summits hosted by Uruguay in 2023, Panama in 2022, and Guatemala in 2021.

Immediately after October 7th, CAM en Espaรฑol jumped into action to mobilize support for Israel and respond to incidents of antisemitism across Latin America, meeting with regional leaders, holding educational webinars, promoting social media campaigns, and raising funds for Israeli emergency relief organizations.

Last week, CAM organized a special four-day solidarity mission to Israel by a group of six Latin American mayors and governors from Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Uruguay, and Chile.

Rahola and Salamon accompanied the delegation during the trip.
