Ten Most Shocking Antisemitism Incidents of November 2022

The CAM Antisemitism Research Center collects comprehensive antisemitism data from around the world on a constant basis, and publishes a regular feature on the top ten antisemitic incidents that shook Jewish communities globally during the preceding month.ย 

The ten most shocking antisemitic incidents of November 2022 are as follows:

1. ‘Developing Threat’ to New York Cityโ€™s Jewish Community Thwarted With Arrests of Armed Men at Penn Station

The arrested men were identified as Christopher Brown, 21, of Aquebogue, New York, and Matthew Mahrer, 22, of Manhattan.

Brown — who allegedly tweeted, “Gonna ask a priest if I should become a husband or shoot up a synagogue and die” — was indicted for making a terroristic threat, aggravated harassment, and criminal possession of a weapon, and Mahrer was charged of criminal possession of a weapon.

2. Bullet Holes Discovered at Rabbiโ€™s Home Next to Synagogue in Essen, Germany

Four bullet holes were discovered at the rabbiโ€™s residence next to the Old Synagogue in Essen, Germany, on Nov. 18, prompting a large-scale police response and investigation.

No one was injured in the incident.

3. New Jersey Man Accused of Sending Online Threats to Attack a Synagogue and Jews

An 18-year-old New Jersey man was arrested on Nov. 10 after sending a manifesto online with threats to attack a synagogue and Jewish people, federal prosecutors say. Omar Alkattoul, a Sayreville resident, is charged with a count of transmitting a threat in interstate and foreign commerce earlier this month, according to a criminal complaint and a statement from Philip Sellinger, US Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

4. Kanye West Tells Alex Jones ‘I Like Hitler’ During Interview

U.S. rapper Kanye West praised Nazi leader Adolf Hitler during an interview alongside Holocaust-denier Nick Fuentes with far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

West — who was dropped by leading companies such as Adidas and Balenciaga following a spate of antisemitic rants — repeatedly commended Hitler during his Infowars appearance.

5. Polish Independence Day March Features Nazi Symbol, Calls to Burn Jews

A Polish opposition lawmaker, Senator Krzysztof Brejza, tweeted a photo from a far-right march in Warsaw of participants carrying a banner with the “Black Sun” symbol of Nazi Germanyโ€™s SS guards. Brejza noted that police did not intervene.

6. Man Arrested After Allegedly Assaulting Toronto Senior, Stomping on Kippah

Khristoff Gordon, 29, was arrested and charged with assault and mischief after a hate crime investigation into an incident in which 70-year-old Jewish man Alan Cohen was violently attacked.

7. Austria — Attack on Student Wearing Kippah at Vienna U-Bahn Station

According to the antisemitism reporting office of the Vienna Jewish Community (IKG), an antisemitic attack occurred at around 8 a.m. on November 3 at the Donaumarina U-Bahn station.

Unknown perpetrators attacked a Jewish schoolboy wearing a yarmulke at the station. The alleged perpetrators have inflicted a blow on the back of the studentโ€™s head. The blow was so strong that the victim was stunned. The alleged perpetrators also laughed at the student.

8. Jewish Day Schools in Pennsylvania, Texas Evacuated Over Bomb Threats

Two Jewish day schools in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and Austin, Texas were evacuated in mid-November after bomb threats were made to the institutions.

No explosive devices were found, and it is not believed the incidentsย were directly connected.

9. London Jews Facing Spree of Antisemitic Attacks

An antisemitic “hate crimes pandemic” has broken out in the Stamford Hill and Hackney sections of London, according to information released by the areaโ€™s Jewish community watch group, Shomrim.

โ€œThe racism pandemic continues,โ€ the group tweeted, reporting on an incident — one of eight in a span of just a few days — in which a Jewish resident of Stamford Hill was attacked by an assailant yelling, โ€œYou Jews, you think you run the world.โ€

10. University of Michigan Police Investigate Assault, Ethnic Intimidation Against Student

The University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a reported assault on campus.

Police say the incident happened at about 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 10 on the university’s North Campus near Baits Field. A student was walking when a man going in the opposite direction allegedly grabbed the student and made an antisemitic comment, according to police.
