The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), in partnership with the Organization of American States (OAS) Mission in Uruguay, organized an academic conference at the Mercosur building in Montevideo featuring the participation of Chair of the CAM Advisory Board for Latin America Pilar Rahola.
More than 50 university administrators, professors, and students attended the gathering, held under the banner of “The Dilemmas of Single Thought.”
OAS Representative in Uruguay Claudia Barrientos delivered opening remarks, followed by a presentation by Rahola.
“I like to talk about the responsibility of citizenship, free citizens, those who have critical thinking,” Rahola said.

Rahola also took questions and comments from the audience, including from many students who voiced concerns about their on-campus experiences.
CAM Director of Hispanic Affairs Shay Salamon concluded the event with a call to action, saying similar meetings co-organized with the OAS would be held in other venues and countries as well.
Numerous university administrators who took part in Monday’s conference expressed interest in future collaborative work with CAM en Español.
The following day, CAM en Español joined a Yom Ha’atzmaut event organized by the Israeli Embassy in Uruguay, marking the 76th anniversary of Israel’s establishment.
More than 200 people attended the event, including government ministers, lawmakers, diplomats, religious leaders, journalists, and Jewish community representatives.
In her remarks, Israeli Ambassador to Uruguay Michal Hershkovitz highlighted Uruguay’s longstanding support for Israel, including in the aftermath of October 7th.
Uruguayan Foreign Minister Omar Paganini reiterated his country’s commitment to its close relationship with Israel. He also voiced the pain he felt over the October 7th massacre and expressed hope for future peace.
Rahola also gave a keynote speech at the event, talking about Uruguay-Israel ties, and recalling her recent CAM-organized visit to Israel with a delegation of six Latin American mayors and governors.

CAM’s outreach in Latin America began three years ago, and since then it has worked diligently to build meaningful partnerships and friendships with influential leaders, lawmakers, community organizations, and civil society activists from a diverse assortment of religious, political and cultural backgrounds in the region to combat antisemitism together.
During this time, CAM en Español has emerged as a key player in the battle against Jew-hatred in Latin America, with a growing coalition engaged in impactful activities in countries including Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Panama, and Guatemala, among others.
CAM en Español has organized regional summits hosted by Uruguay in 2023, Panama in 2022, and Guatemala in 2021.
