Students at the University of California, Berkeley applauded a convicted terrorist during a campus event on Monday.
Israa Jaabis, who was convicted for an attempted car bombing near Jerusalem, was released in November 2023 as part of a exchange deal following the October 7th massacre the previous month.
She spoke during a “Palestinian Political Prisoners Day” program organized by campus chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). A video posted by the organizing group showed a packed classroom applauding her remarks.
Jaabis’s conviction stems from a 2015 incident next to Ma’ale Adumim, just east of Jerusalem. According to Israeli authorities, she attempted to ignite a gas cylinder inside her vehicle using combustible materials. The explosion injured both her and an Israeli police officer who had stopped the car after observing suspicious behavior.
During the incident, she reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar.” Investigators later said they found handwritten materials expressing support for “martyrs.”
Jaabis denied carrying out an attack. Her family attributed the explosion to a mechanical malfunction. The Palestinian Authority also rejected the Israeli account at the time.
At one of America’s top law schools, a convicted terrorist was not met with scrutiny, but with applause — in a classroom meant to train future legal professionals.
