Weaponizing Holocaust Memory: Anti-Israel Protest Planned at Buchenwald Ceremony

Anti-Israel activists plan to stage a protest on April 11–12 during this year’s liberation commemoration at Buchenwald concentration camp.

The protest is being organized by Kufiyas Network through its initiative “Kufiyas in Buchenwald.” The group opposes guidelines introduced in April 2025 that prohibit visitors from wearing the keffiyeh and other Palestinian symbols on the Buchenwald memorial grounds. Due to the restrictions, organizers say they will hold their protest outside the site.

In a public statement, the activists accused the memorial of “historical revisionism and genocide denial.” They also alleged that the site spread “Israeli propaganda.” In addition, they claimed it provided “ideological support for the ongoing genocide in Palestine.”

The group called on the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation to address what it termed “the genocide in Gaza” during official events. It also demanded that the foundation lift the symbol ban. Furthermore, it urged the foundation to stop restricting visitors who criticize Israel.

A spokesperson for the foundation addressed the controversy in comments to the German outlet NZZ. “We are concerned that attempts are being made to inappropriately exploit the commemoration,” the spokesperson said.

The Nazi regime established Buchenwald in 1937 near Weimar, Germany. An estimated 75,000 Jews were imprisoned at the camp, and nearly 12,000 perished there.
