A North Miami woman is facing multiple charges after police said she attacked a Jewish man wearing a kippah at a Starbucks inside a Target store in North Miami Beach last Sunday.
In the incident, the assailant struck the victim twice with a cell phone before returning with a metal chair. Police said the attack was motivated by hatred.
The assault occurred around 2:40 p.m. at the Target on Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami Beach.
The arrest report said 43-year-old Chyvonne Juanita Palmer “suddenly stood up” from the opposite side of the Starbucks seating area, approached the victim, and began screaming at him.
She hit him twice with a black cell phone and returned to her seat. Moments later, she got up again and approached him carrying a metal chair. A witness told officers Palmer “repeatedly shouted ‘I hate them'” as she went after him.
“I wasn’t looking for problems,” the victim said. “Didn’t interact with her before.” He described the attack as “completely unprovoked.”
Two women intervened before Palmer could strike him with the chair, with one leading the victim into a restroom for safety.
Officers arrested Palmer at the scene on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with prejudice, and disorderly conduct.
