Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat Appointed as US Secretary of State’s Special Adviser on Holocaust Issues

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has appointed Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat as his Special Adviser on Holocaust Issues, the State Department announced on Monday.

In this role, Ambassador Eizenstat’s principal task will be to “offer policy advice on contemporary Holocaust-related matters,” a State Department statement said.

“He will do so in close coordination with the Department of State’s Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues, Ellen Germain, in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and with the Office of International Claims and Investment Disputes in the Office of the Legal Adviser,” it added.

Ambassador Eizenstat — a Senior Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP — brings a wealth of relevant experience to this position, most recently having held the same advisory role for former Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, and serving as an Expert Adviser on Holocaust Issues during former President Donald Trump’s administration.

As Special Representative of the President and Secretary of State on Holocaust-Era Issues during former President Bill Clinton’s administration in the 1990s, Ambassador Eizenstat negotiated agreements with Austria, France, Germany, and Switzerland on property restitution, compensation payments to slave and forced laborers, recovery of looted art and bank accounts, and payment of insurance policies.
