City of Aventura, FL Calls on Florida State University to Remove Anti-Semitic Student Senate President
The city commission of Aventura, Florida, located in Miami-Dade County, adopted a resolution last week that calls on Florida State University (FSU) to remove Student Senate President Ahmad Daraldik from his position.
The language of the resolution spotlights Daraldik’s social media post using the words “stupid jew” and a website belonging to him that compares Israel to Nazi Germany, accuses the Jewish State of Blood Libel for “organ harvesting” and claims that Zionism is prohibited in the Torah.
The resolution states, “The City denounces the anti-Semitic social media posts made by the Florida State University Senate President and the City encourages citizens to stand up against anti-Semitism in all its forms, and to speak out against anti-Semitism through peaceful speech and action.”
The resolution further stated that the city “strongly urges the Florida State University President [John Thrasher] to demonstrate Florida State University’s intolerance for such anti-Semitic social media posts by taking action, including the condemnation of the social media posts, and removal of the Florida State University Senate President.”
Speaking on the resolution, Aventura Vice Mayor Howard Weinberg said that he is encouraging other cities in Miami-Dade County to pass similar resolutions. “We’re not going to be silent. We’re not going to be complicit when we’re dealing with this kind of hateful anti-Semitism, especially on the campus of one of our great state universities,” Weinberg said.
Earlier in June, Daraldik survived a vote of no confidence against him in the student senate. While a majority of students voted to remove Daraldik from his position, the required two-thirds majority necessary for removal was not achieved.
In response to Daraldik’s anti-Semitism, the FSU Student Senate passed a resolution that adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s Definition of anti-Semitism in a contentious vote last week.
