Assistant Special Envoy Decries Twitter’s Hypocrisy for not Banning Iran’s Supreme Leader

U.S. Assistant Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Ellie Cohanim recently decried Twitter’s Hypocrisy for not censuring the dangerously anti-Semitic tweets of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Speaking with Newsmax, Cohanim detailed how Twitter has censured or banned others from the platform including U.S. President Donald Trump but failed to take action against the Iranian Supreme Leader who has used his twitter platform to incite violence against Jews and called for the destruction of the Jewish State.

Addressing this topic recently, a Twitter spokesperson told a hearing on anti-Semitism being hosted by the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament) Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs that the Iranian Supreme Leader’s calls for Israel’s destruction do not violate the company’s policies against hate speech, and indicated that they are considered mere “foreign policy saber-rattling.”

The Supreme Leader’s tweets echo anti-Semitic conspiracies and call for the destruction of the world’s only Jewish State, Israel.

Cohanim said, “Twitter is trying to defend the indefensible. They are trying to defend that they have allowed Ayatollah Khamenei on Twitter to echo Hitler and the Nazis’ final solution and called for armed resistance and the elimination of Israel. Khamenei’s statements are beyond the pail. I have called on twitter to block him permanently.”

Cohanim described what she views as “Twitter’s hypocrisy, where they are flagging certain of President Trump’s tweets.” “The hypocrisy here is so blatant and obvious,” Cohanim said.

The Assistant Special Envoy raised this issue after Twitter recently instituted permanent bans on former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan David Duke and British Rapper Wiley, who have both engaged in anti-Semitic rhetoric on the platform. As the head of state of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Ayatollah’s anti-Semitic rhetoric is arguably much more dangerous than those of Duke and Wiley.
