The Parliament of the Balearic Islands Passes Resolution Endorsing IHRA Definition of Anti-Semitism

As first reported by the European Jewish Congress, the Parliament of the Balearic Islands adopted a resolution condemning anti-Semitism in all its forms, including boycotts against the State of Israel.

The Balearic Islands, notably including Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, is an autonomous province within the Kingdom of Spain. The resolution urged the Balearic government to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism.

The resolution was adopted by an absolute majority by the parliament’s committee of Social Affairs and Human Rights. The text of the resolution condemned all boycott activities against the Jewish State of Israel, and specifically condemned the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement for its “anti-Semitic character” and for “violating the rights and liberties of individuals.”

All Political groups in the Balearic Parliament voted in favor of the resolution. The text further encourages, “actions that promote honouring the memory of all the Jews, conversos and their descendants who were murdered, retaliated and discriminated against throughout the history of the Balearic Islands,” in reference to the Islands’ Jewish community that was persecuted during the Spanish Inquisition.

The Resolution was initially introduced by MP Maxo Benalal of the Ciudadanos (C’s) party.
