Ax-Attack Thwarted at Ukrainian Synagogue
An ax-wielding man stormed into a synagogue in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol this morning, Tuesday July 28th. Thankfully, the attacker was disarmed and driven away by the synagogue’s security guard, the Times of Israel reported.
The attempted attack took place during the synagogue’s morning prayer service and was recorded by the synagogue’s security cameras.
The community’s rabbi along with several congregants, were inside the building while the attack took place. At this time, it is unknown if the security guard sustained injuries while fighting off the attacker.
In security camera footage of the incident, a scuffle ensues between the security guard and the man with the ax. Both men exchange blows until the attacker ultimately runs off after the security guard gained control of the weapon.
A short while later, the attacker returned and threw the contents of a sack at the building before walking off again. According to a report, he threw feces, sand and other unknown materials at the house of worship.
The Mariupol police are currently searching for the attacker, according to the synagogue’s Rabbi Menachem Mendel Cohen, who witnessed the attack unfold.
Rabbi Cohen thanked the security guard, identified as Richard Anatolyevich Golomazov, for protecting the worshipers from injury or harm.
