August 26, 2020

A Jewish Israeli man was stabbed to death on Wednesday by a male Palestinian attacker in the Tel Aviv suburb of Petah Tikva in what is being described as a terrorist attack, the Times of Israel reported.

According to local police, the suspect was arrested near the scene of the attack a short while later. “The results of the investigation raise the suspicion of a nationalistic motive,”  a police statement said.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Rabbi Shai Ohayon. The father of four and member of Petah Tikva’s Haredi community, suffered multiple stab wounds. Rabbi Ohayon was a full time student at religious institution in the nearby town of Kfar Saba.

The suspect was identified as a 46-year-old man named Khalil Abd al-Khaliq Dweikat from the northern West Bank village of Rujeeb. Dweikat, a father of six, was in Israel with a legal work permit, according to security services. He had no history of terrorist activities. Police officers recovered a blood-stained knife from Dweikat while they arrested him.

A medic from the United Hatzalah emergency response service said, “When we arrived at the scene, we found a man who had been stabbed and was unconscious. We gave him first aid while performing CPR.”  While continuing CPR on the victim, medics brought him to Petah Tikva’s Beilinson Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead by doctors.

A relative of Rabbi Ohayon told the Ynet news website, “He was the perfect husband, the perfect father, the perfect son-in-law.” “His wife is not processing [the news], she’s in shock. It’s unfathomable.” Yosef David, a friend of the victim told Ynet, “God has taken a holy man…I can’t process it. This is a huge loss.”
