Neo-Nazis Perform ‘Heil Hitler’ Salute Outside Adelaide Holocaust Museum in Australia
A photo has emerged of several neo-Nazis performing a “Heil Hitler” salute outside the Adelaide Holocaust Museum in Australia.
A group calling itself the National Socialist Network has been circulating on the Telegram messaging platform, news.com.au reported.
Text accompanying the photo says: “Why a holocaust museum exists in Adelaide is anyone’s guess.”
Museum Director Kathy Baykitch called the incident “unthinkable.”
“Extremist groups are active and organizing in online spaces,” she told the Adelaide Advertiser. “These disgusting acts of racist vandalism bring to the fore the critical importance of supporting the education of young people through our programs. Our museum and education programs stand as a counterpoint to hateful ideologies.”
A South Australia Police spokesperson said the incident was being investigated.
Dr. Dvir Abramovich — chairman of Australia’s Anti-Defamation Commission — called the image a “frontal assault on our values” that “plunged a dagger into the heart of every survivor” of the Nazi genocide.
“When this type of cruel ugliness comes into full view, it reminds us that there are hardcore bigots in our midst,” he added. “The contagion of unvarnished, raw hate that is now defiling Adelaide has reached an ominous pitch fever and is spiraling out of control.”
Abramovich urged South Australia to follow other Australian states and territories that have recently outlawed public displays of Nazi swastikas.
Last month, an antisemitic sticker was found on the front door of the Adelaide Holocaust Museum, which opened in 2020.
