A student “diversity, equity and inclusion” representative at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles is at the center of controversy after hateful tweets she wrote, including one from May saying, “I want to kill every motherf–king zionist,” recently surfaced.

Additional past inflammatory tweets by Yasmeen Mashayekh – a DEI senator for USC’s Viterbi Graduate Student Association — include, “If you are not for the complete destruction of Israel and the occupation forces then you’re anti-Palestinian,” “Zionists are going to f–king pay,” and, “Yes I f–king love hamas now stfu,” among others.

Mashayekh has refused retract or apologize for her antisemitic social media posts.

Earlier this month, more than 60 current and past USC faculty members wrote a letter to the university’s top administrators demanding they “publicly and explicitly rebuke Yasmeen Mashayekh for her offensive behavior and to distance USC from her hateful statements.”

“Repeated threats of murder and harm based on race, religion, ethnicity, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation, etc. are not acceptable discourse, even in the context of heated debates on difficult political issues,” the letter said. “The absence of explicit condemnation amounts to tacit endorsement. This is a slap in the face to USC students, staff, and faculty who are Jewish and to anyone who supports the right of the State of Israel to exist.”

A USC spokesperson commented, “The individual is a member of a graduate student group that is self-organized, elects its own council members and does not set the university’s policies. Even though the statements at issue are legally protected, we understand they are disturbing. USC rejects and condemns hatred in all its forms.”

Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Advisory Board member and former U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Elan S. Carr tweeted this weekend, “More #Antisemitism @USC: DEI student senator tweets that she wants ‘to kill every [expletive] zionist,’ and that she loves Hamas. Let’s be clear: ‘DEI’ is too often a euphemism for the anti-American and antisemitic ideology of the radical left.”
