GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

THIS WEEK'S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

This week, we continued to monitor antisemitism around the world while advocating for more actions to be made.

This week, a California man was arrested for threatening to kill a Florida Sheriff after the FBI traced his threats on the website 4chan. According to investigators, Tyler Meyer, a 30-year-old Californian, was arrested by the San Diego Police Department for threatening to kill Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. Sheriff Chitwood has faced criticism from certain groups for his condemnation of antisemitic demonstrations in the county, resulting in him and his family receiving threatening or harassing messages from multiple sources.

In the UK, the new leader of Britain’s biggest education union has been accused of ‘inciting violence’ over a video filmed in 2021, in which he called on a crowd to “globalize the intifada.” In France, protests against President Macron’s pension reform have led to increased online antisemitism as groups and individuals have been circulating antisemitic tropes in relation to the “financial and political power” of the Rothschild family.

In the Middle East, a Lebanese runner and Hezbollah supporter pulled out of a race in an international competition after he discovered that an athlete from Israel would also be participating. The runner told Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television channel that he considers his withdrawal from the championship “a victory.” He added that he supports Hezbollah and does not formally recognize Israel, and thus will not participate in any sports competition with Israeli athletes, according to Press TV.

This week’s global antisemitism report highlights 24 new media reports of antisemitic incidents. The total includes 9 (37.5%) from the far-right, 3 (12.5%) from the far-left, 6 (25.0%) with Islamist motivations, and 6 (25.0%) unidentifiable in nature.

THIS WEEK IN ONLINE ANTISEMITISM: PROTESTS IN FRANCE

By CYBERWELL

Mass demonstrations are taking place across France in protest of President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms. These demonstrations have become fertile ground for spreading antisemitic content on social media platforms. This week, CyberWell observed a spike in hateful, anti-Jewish posts implicating Jewish people in the protests in France. The prevailing antisemitic theory that CyberWell pinpointed was that France, and President Macron in particular, is allegedly controlled by the Rothschild family. A branch of the family has been in France since the beginning of the 19th century when James Mayer de Rothschild established a bank in Paris.

WEEKLY ANTI-ISRAEL DETRACTOR EVENTS

By ISRAEL ON CAMPUS COALITION (ICC)

This week alone, ICC registered 51 anti-Israel detractor events across colleges and universities in the United States. For the second consecutive week, the number of detractor events fell below its weekly average. This trend most likely reflects a shift in when Israeli Apartheid Weeks were held on campus, with more frequency in the month of March this year than in years past.

Detractor events are events on campus with an anti-Israel agenda. They can include speakers, BDS campaigns, graffiti incidents, demonstrations, etc. Traditionally, these events are hosted by organizations that deny Israel’s right to exist.
