GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

THIS WEEK'S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

This week, we continued to monitor antisemitism around the world while advocating for more actions to be made.

After several months of trivializing the Holocaust, allying with white supremacists, and propagating centuries-old antisemitic tropes, U.S rapper Kanye West resurfaced this past week on Instagram to inform his followers that after watching Jonah Hill’s performance in the film 21 Jump Street, he once again “likes Jewish people.” West’s antisemitic rhetoric since last fall motivated dozens of hate crimes targeting the U.S. Jewish community.

Meanwhile, U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib shared on social media a video purporting to show Israeli soldiers attacking Palestinians celebrating Ramadan at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. “This is the violent apartheid government of Israel,” Tlaib, a Democrat who represents Michigan’s 12th congressional district, wrote. “Don’t look away.”

It quickly came to light though that Tlaib’s tweet was a distortion of reality. In fact, the video showed a brawl between Palestinians, with Israeli police intervening to separate them. Congresswoman Tlaib has yet to correct her tweet or issue an apology.

In Germany, there were three incidents this week in which Holocaust memorial monuments were vandalized. In Montreal, Canada, a 100-year old synagogue and a baseball clubhouse were vandalized with spray-painted swastikas and antisemitic slogans, such as “Hitler rules.:

In Athens, Greece, police arrested two Iran-born Pakistani nationals who were allegedly planning attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets during the upcoming Passover holiday. The suspects were believed to be part of a Tehran regime-backed terror network plotting mass-casualty strikes – marking the third time since 2021 Iran has sought to kill Jews on the European continent, with previous incidents occurring in Germany and the United Kingdom.

This week’s global antisemitism report highlights 30 new reports of antisemitic incidents. The total includes 20 (66.7%) from the far-right, 3 (10.0%) from the far-left, 3 (10.0%) with Islamist motivations, and 4 (13.3%) unidentifiable in nature.

KANYE WEST: ‘WATCHING JONAH HILL IN 21 JUMP STREET MADE ME LIKE JEWISH PEOPLE AGAIN

By PHILISSA CRAMER

Kanye West announced on Saturday that he now is a fan of Jewish people, reversing the stance he revealed back in October when he vowed to “go death con 3 ON JEWISH PEOPLE.” The latest twist in a saga that has fueled antisemitic rhetoric across the United States was prompted, West said on Instagram, by seeing the Jewish actor Jonah Hill in the 2012 buddy cop comedy “21 Jump Street.” “Watching Jonah Hill in 21 Jump street made me like Jewish people again. No one should take anger against one or two individuals and transform that into hatred towards millions of innocent people,” West wrote in a caption accompanying an image of the movie poster.

TLAIB BODIED BY TWITTER OVER ‘LIES’ THAT TEENAGE BRAWL WAS ISRAELI SOLDIERS ATTACKING PALESTINIANS

By HOUSTON KEENE

Far-left Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a progressive “Squad” Democrat, got bodied by Twitter for her “lies” that a brawl between Palestinian teenagers in Jerusalem was actually the “violent apartheid government of Israel” targeting Palestinians with the military. Tlaib, one of the most notorious anti-Israel House lawmakers, has made numerous wild claims about the Jewish homeland, including being an “apartheid” state that targets Palestinians and claiming a person can’t be progressive if they back Israel.

By CAM

Two Iran-born Pakistani men were arrested by Greek police on Tuesday over an alleged plot to conduct mass-casualty terrorist attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets in Athens. The suspects, ages 27 and 29, were part of a Tehran regime-backed network, according to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, which was involved in thwarting the planned attacks. A third man, not located in Greece, is wanted for questioning and was charged in absentia. Media reports said the Chabad House in central Athens, which includes a synagogue and kosher restaurant, was a target in the plot.

By DAVID KLEIN

A year and a half after representatives of 37 European nations made commitments to combat antisemitism, only 16% of European Jewish leaders said they felt their countries had fully implemented those promises, a report released by the World Jewish Congress revealed on Tuesday. The pledges were made at the Malmö International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism in October 2021, during which “states committed to supporting many initiatives dealing with combating antisemitism, fostering Jewish life, and promoting Holocaust remembrance.”

MORE THAN 80 LAWMAKERS CALL FOR ADDITIONAL BOOST IN ANTISEMITISM ENVOY FUNDING

By MARC ROD

A bipartisan group of 83 House members is urging House Appropriations Committee leaders to boost funding for the State Department’s Office of the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism to $2 million for 2024, as well as new measures to ensure that the office’s work continues through future administrations. A letter being sent today from the legislators pushes for an additional $500,000 over the 2023 funding level for the office of the special envoy, headed by Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt. It’s a larger increase than proposed by the Biden administration in its own budget request; the White House asked for $1.7 million. The letter also highlights concerns that delays in confirming future special envoys could delay the office’s work.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SHARES ON TIKTOK TO EDUCATE YOUNG PEOPLE

By TED SHAFFREY

In the family living room in Morristown, New Jersey, he records short videos of his grandmother reminiscing about life in 1944 and 1945 when she was a 6-year-old child at the Auschwitz death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. She also discusses her experiences before and after the camp. They say videos on her account have garnered 75 million views since the duo started posting in September 2021. “It really snowballed,” said Friedman. “And then we realized it was a fabulous medium for the Holocaust, for young people who don’t want to read the books, who don’t like the classes in school, who don’t like the way the teachers teach or whatever, who are bored with it, or some who never heard of it. Here they are, listening.”
