THIS WEEK'S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

This week, we continued to monitor antisemitism around the world while advocating for more actions to be made.

Antisemitic Hate Crimes Surge 182% in New York City in January

According to recent figures released by the New York Police Department (NYPD), Jews in the city were targeted by 31 reported antisemitic hate crimes – a 182 percent year-over-year increase.

Furthermore, antisemitic incidents accounted for approximately 54 percent of all reported bias crimes, making antisemitism the most prevalent form of hate crime during the period.

City authorities must vigorously combat this scourge of hatred.

Incidents the Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) by CAM documented this week include:

France: Vandals smashed the windows and ripped a plaque off a Jewish elementary school in eastern Paris.
United States: The Philly Palestine Coalition held a rally at Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square during which demonstrators glorified Hamas, chanted for “intifada,” and displayed effigies of Israeli soldiers hanging in nooses.
Poland: A man verbally abused a group of Orthodox Jewish Israelis at the Krakow airport.

NY teen arrested for sending ‘kill all Jews’ email to hundreds of classmates

A 17-year-old boy was busted for allegedly sending emails about “killing Jews” to “multiple people” connected with his Queens charter school on Monday, cops and sources said. The teen – who attended the Renaissance Charter School on 81st Street near 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights – allegedly sent his antisemitic screed to several people around 12:30 p.m., police said. He was arrested about three hours later and charged with making terroristic threats and aggravated harassment as a hate crime, authorities said. It was unclear whether the hateful messages were directed at students, faculty or both.

Australia: 40 posters glorifying Bondi terrorist plastered across Melbourne CBD

Around 40 posters featuring the image of one of the Bondi Beach terrorists have been plastered across Melbourne’s CBD in what the Anti-Defamation Commission has called “psychological terrorism”. The posters display the face of Naveed Akram and deliberately mimic the visual style of the “Aussie” street art series created by artist Peter Drew, appropriating the visual language of inclusive Australian identity to glorify a perpetrator of antisemitic mass murder.

Iranian lawmakers on Sunday called for the destruction of the United States and Israel, chanting “death” to both nations during a session in which the chamber’s speaker said the Islamic Republic now considers all E.U. militaries to be terrorist groups, according to the Associated Press.

South Africa: Israeli DJ Harassed at Cape Town Party

South Africans in Cape Town have once again defied the local hate movement that wants to exclude Jews from society. A music event went ahead at the Castle of Good Hope (the Castle) on Saturday, 24 January, despite extremists trying to have it cancelled because the organiser and main DJ was born in Israel and once hosted an event there. The Cape Town party, called “Yalla Valhalla” not only went ahead without a hitch, it had its highest-ever number of attendees. Extremists were targeting organiser Dino Ben Tovim, who was born in Israel but grew up in Cape Town and sees himself as South African. “I’m apolitical; my company is 100% South African; I pay taxes; I support the local market; I provide jobs; and my team is all South African,” says Ben Tovim, who goes by the stage name Ben Tov. “I would like to see peace in the Middle East.” But for the extremists, his Israeli roots meant he has no place here.

Antisemitic ‘Murga’ Performance at Uruguay Carnival Draws Viral Response From CAM en Español

Celebrations of the annual Carnival holiday in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo were marred last week by antisemitic content included in a performance of the Doña Bastarda musical theater (“murga”) group. The script for the “Patria o Tumba” (“Homeland or Grave”) show, attended by many families with children, included an antisemitic phrase — “I’ll turn them into soap,” a clear reference to Jews and the Holocaust. CAM Director of Hispanic Affairs Salamon posted on X, “As someone whose family was murdered by the Nazis, I am not speaking theoretically — I am speaking from memory and alarm.” “This is not a one-off debate,” he added. “It is about how we have come to normalize boundaries that should never be crossed. That a murga scriptwriter would think of using references to the Nazi extermination as a creative resource is already concerning. These are not just words: they are invocations of real practices of the Holocaust, the darkness of humanity at its most extreme, something that should never again be used on any stage. That this is accepted, legitimized, and even awarded makes the problem even more serious. None of this arises out of nowhere.”

Chinese national arrested in Spain on suspicion of funding Hamas

Spanish authorities have arrested a man suspected of providing Hamas with about €600,000 ($711,000) in cryptocurrency transfers, Reuters cited regional police as saying on Friday. The suspect, a 38-year-old Chinese national, owns a hair salon near Barcelona, the report said. Investigators have found at least 31 crypto transactions made by the suspect to addresses of an entity suspected to belong to the Gaza-ruling terrorist group.

New York: JTS Student Harassed

Nine days after a Jewish student endured antisemitic harassment and after it was criticized for its silence on the matter, Columbia University issued a two-paragraph statement last week. The private Manhattan academic institution stated that a “non-affiliate” targeted a Columbia student with “antisemitic slurs” as the student left a Jewish Theological Seminary building near campus. (Columbia and JTS have joint programs.)

Anti-Jewish hate crimes up 182% in New York City in Mamdani's first month as mayor, per NYPD

The New York City Police Department reported what it said was its safest January for gun violence in recorded history but admitted, at the end of a press release, that antisemitic hate crimes were up 182% in the city in January 2026 compared to January 2025. Overall, the NYPD hate crimes task force investigated 152% more incidents last month (58) compared to January 2025 (23), including 31 anti-Jewish hate crimes last month compared to 11 in January 2025. The antisemitic hate crimes “accounted for more than half of all the hate crime incidents in January,” the NYPD stated. About 10% of New Yorkers are estimated to be Jewish.
