THIS WEEK'S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT
This week, we continued to monitor antisemitism around the world while advocating for more actions to be made.
Throughout the month of May, 38 governors and 135 mayors across the United States officially recognized Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) — an indication of the growing awareness of the critical importance and timely relevance of this annual opportunity to highlight and celebrate Jewish contributions to U.S. society and educate the general public about Jewish culture, traditions, and history.
Under the sinister slogan “Resistance until reclamation, generation after generation, until total liberation,” a “Nakba Day” protest was held in downtown Portland, Oregon, with demonstrators chanting vicious antisemitic slogans. In addition, an Amnesty International USA board member shared content on Twitter indicating support for Palestinian terrorism and the elimination of Israel.
In the UK, several reports highlighted the growing antisemitic harassment Orthodox Jews in London’s Stamford Hill neighborhood face. In Germany, prosecutors charged a prominent member of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party for using a banned Nazi slogan in an election campaign. In France, antisemitic graffiti was discovered on a synagogue in the Paris suburb of Issy-les-Moulineaux.
In South Africa, the leader of the Al Jama-ah political party called on police to “arrest Zionist bodies in Cape Town,” claiming they were “after our students at University of Cape Town.” In Poland, a lecture by historian Jan Grabowski on the history of antisemitism in the country before and during the Holocaust was canceled after a far-right lawmaker stormed the podium.
In the Middle East, Libyan TV show host Afaf Abdel Mohsen praised Palestinians for having so many children and pushing them toward death and martyrdom. She said that Palestinian mothers raised their children on “resistance” and the “honor of returning to this land, using their blood, by sacrificing them.”This week’s global antisemitism report highlights 40 new reports of antisemitic incidents. The total includes 20 (50.0%) from the far-right, 2 (5.0%) from the far-left, 11 (27.5%) with Islamist motivations, and 7 (17.5%) unidentifiable in nature.
