THIS WEEK'S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

This week, we continued to monitor antisemitism around the world while advocating for more actions to be made.

A Jewish man was attacked outside a screening of the “Nova” documentary in Chicago this week as anti-Israel protestors sought to obstruct the theater’s entrance. In Cincinnati, Ohio, a homemade banner reading “Save Ireland From the Jews” was unfurled on a pedestrian overpass. In New York City, more than 100 demonstrators were arrested at the New York Times offices, as they protested the paper’s alleged complicity in Israeli “genocide” of Palestinians in Gaza. In San Francisco, California, pro-Hamas demonstrators blocked the international terminal at San Francisco International Airport.

Last weekend, anti-Jewish and anti-Israel graffiti was found on the walls of Norwich Synagogue in the UK, including messages equating Zionism with Nazism and references to “Isra’hell” and “apartheid.” Anti-Israel protests also occurred across Europe, including in Austria, Spain, United Kingdom, and France. These demonstrations featured antisemitic manifestations, including overt Holocaust minimization and denial, as well as chants calling for the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state.

In a suburb of Paris, France, a Holocaust memorial was damaged by a vandal with a pellet gun. At the Paris Institute of Political Studies, a Jewish student was prevented from entering a lecture hall occupied by pro-Hamas protesters, who yelled, “Don’t let her in, she’s a Zionist!” This prompted widespread condemnation, including from French President (and university alumnus) Emmanuel Macron and Gender Equality Minister Aurore Bergé.

South African announced that dual citizens currently serving in the IDF could potentially be charged with war crimes upon return to South Africa. In Japan, a man draped in a Palestinian flag walked the streets of Tokyo to “honor the martyrs,” according to his social media posts. Also in Japan, a protester shouted “You are committing genocide like the Nazis did” when their anti-Israel protest was criticized by a bypasser.

The Brazilian Province of São Paulo adopted the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism last Friday. São Paulo was the second Brazilian province to adopt the definition and the 1,231 entity worldwide. This important step in the fight against antisemitism was praised on social media by OAS Commissioner to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Fernando Lottenberg and U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Deborah Lipstadt

This week’s Global Antisemitism Report highlights 156 new incidents, categorized as follows: 130 (83.33%) as anti-Israel or anti-Zionist manifestations of antisemitism, 13 (8.33%) as classical antisemitism, 5 (3.21%) as Islamist, 2 (1.28%) as Holocaust minimization and distortion, and 6 (3.85%) as unattributable.
