THIS WEEK'S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT
This week, we continued to monitor antisemitism around the world while advocating for more actions to be made.
A bus carrying a group of Jewish students in South Florida was evacuated following a bomb threat this week. American fashion model Bella Hadid shared on social media a video promoting the antisemitic ideology of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. In Washington, D.C., the Women’s National Democratic Club was criticized for hosting a speaking appearance by notorious anti-Israel activist Max Blumenthal, who has promoted numerous October 7th conspiracy theories..
In Zurich, Switzerland, an Orthodox Jewish man was stabbed by a teenager who yelled “Death to the Jews” and declared he was acting on behalf of “Al-Aqsa.” In Paris, France, a man leaving a synagogue was assaulted by an attacker who shouted “dirty Jew.” In London, England, a Jewish passenger was harassed on the Underground by a man who blew electronic cigarette smoke in his face, before saying “Your religion is killing Muslims.” Also in the UK this week, George Galloway, a vociferously anti-Israel former Labour Party member and radio host who was fired for antisemitic remarks, was elected to parliament. After being sworn into office, Galloway compared the current Israel-Hamas war to the Holocaust.
In Latin America, Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. Similar rhetoric was heard from Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who lashed out at Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou, accusing him of being “an accomplice of the genocide in Palestine.” This followed Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s recent comparison of Israel to Nazi Germany and the conflict in Gaza to the Holocaust, sentiments that were echoed by his wife, Janja Lula da Silva.
On college campuses in the U.S., the problem of anti-Jewish hate persisted this week. Five student bodies – at the University of Virginia, Tufts University, UC Riverside, Columbia College, and the University of Houston – passed BDS resolutions and statements falsely accusing Israel of genocide. Jewish students at Toronto’s Ontario College of Art & Design University discovered antisemitic messages spread around campus, including death threats.
This week’s Global Antisemitism Report highlights 116 new incidents, categorized as follows: 5 (4.31%) as Holocaust minimization and distortion, 17 (14.66%) as classical antisemitism, 83 (71.55%) as Israel-related of antisemitism, 5 (4.31%) as Islamist, and 6 (5.17%) as unattributable.
