Weekly Report – September 14

This Week's

GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

THIS WEEK'S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

This week, we continued to monitor antisemitism around the world while advocating for more actions to be made.

As Jews worldwide prepare to welcome the High Holidays, leaders and community members are watching with concern rising threats to Jewish houses of worship. In the last two months, almost 50 synagogues across the US have been evacuated due to bomb threats. These fears are magnified by the increasing levels of antisemitism on social media, where just this week, for example, ex-U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney promoted a livestream event featuring notorious white supremacist David Duke and black nationalist author Ayo Kimathi, who authored a book titled ‘Jews Are The Problem.’

Across Europe, multiple antisemitic incidents involving acts of violence and hate speech were reported. In Berlin, antisemitic graffiti featuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a devil’s tail was sprayed on the Ministry of Finance building. In France, Yaël Braun-Pivet, the president of the country’s National Assembly, received an antisemitic letter with a yellow Star of David drawn on it. In Budapest, Hungary, an Israeli tour guide and her mother were accosted and assaulted by a group of individuals making antisemitic gestures and statements.

From Australia to Germany,  and the United Kingdom to the United States, numerous leaders repudiated Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas’ claim that the Nazis murdered Jews due to “their social role.” Despite the backlash, the PA doubled down on its leader’s long track record of Holocaust denial and distortion.

This week’s global antisemitism report highlights 36 new reports of antisemitic incidents. The total includes 24 (66.67%) from the far-right, 3 (8.33%) from the far-left, 3 (8.33%) with Islamist motivations, and 6 (16.67%) unidentifiable in nature.

AT LEAST 49 SYNAGOGUES HAVE BEEN EVACUATED DUE TO BOMB THREATS IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS

By ANDREW LAPIN

At least two more synagogues in the United States evacuated their congregants over the weekend following bomb threats, the latest in a series of such calls that have put dozens of congregations on high alert heading into the High Holidays. One of the synagogues was threatened during the pre-Rosh Hashanah Selichot services on Saturday night, in a sign that the perpetrators of the wave of attacks are paying careful attention to when synagogues are holding events before calling in their threats.

AHEAD OF HIGH HOLIDAYS, US JEWISH LEADERS STRESS NEED FOR SECURITY VIGILANCE AS ANTISEMITISM SURGES

By DAVID CRARY

Ahead of the High Holidays that begin this week, a network of Jewish security experts and religious leaders hosted several webinars to help prepare for the season. Among the topics: How to respond to an “active threat” targeting the Jewish community, and how to stop severe bleeding. The holidays, encompassing Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, are meant to be a period of joy and reflection. Over recent years — in the face of increased antisemitic threats and violence — the season also is a time of heightened vigilance.

TORONTO EVENT TO FOCUS ON COUNTERING ANTISEMITISM AT CANADIAN SCHOOLS

By AVI KUMAR

Canada recognized the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism in 2019, and Ontario adopted it in 2020. However, many school boards in the province have opted not to adopt the definition. Margolese organized a Sept. 10 event titled “Stronger Together to End Jew Hatred,” which will take place at the Orthodox synagogue Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (“the BAYT”). It aimed to “provide attendees with the knowledge to recognize and counter Jew-hatred within the Canadian education system,” the rabbi told JNS.

ROSH HASHANAH LETTER-WRITING CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED FOR US JOURNALIST DETAINED IN RUSSIA

But soon, his circle of correspondents is due to expand. In the days surrounding Rosh Hashanah, people from around the world will be sending Gershkovich letters, all wishing him a happy new year. Gershkovich, 31, a Wall Street Journal reporter and son of Jewish refugees from the Soviet Union, has been detained since March on charges of espionage that he, the Journal and the United States government vehemently deny. He has yet to stand trial.
