At a press conference on Friday, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Miguel Ángel Moratinos unveiled the UN Action Plan to Enhance Monitoring and Response to Antisemitism.
“Antisemitism is a global scourge that must be addressed,” Moratinos remarked. “Therefore, our efforts to counter it, as with all manifestations of extremism and incitement to religious hatred and violence, will benefit from a comprehensive approach that engages all stakeholders including state and non-state actors.”
While the plan mentioned the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism, it noted, “The United Nations Secretariat does not endorse any definition on antisemitism.”
Later on Friday, Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) CEO Sacha Roytman issued the following statement:
“The UN was founded on the ashes of the Holocaust to prevent similar atrocities from ever recurring. Yet, over the past eight decades, it has failed its purpose again and again decades when it comes to protecting the Jewish people and state.”
“High Representative Moratinos is a valued partner who we’ve been pleased to work with in recent years, and we welcome his efforts to fight antisemitism, including the building of the plan he presented today. Yet there is rightfully little trust in UN institutions to address and counter Jew-hatred effectively and properly, and adoption and implementation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism must be a central component of any serious initiative to do so.”
