CAM Coalition Partners Spotlight: From Grassroots to Institutional Efforts in Stopping Jew-Hatred

Individuals have the potential to change the whole world over, but when institutions and organizations add their efforts into the struggle against religious hatred and antisemitism, these ideal dreams can be achieved on a grand scale.

Here is a sampling of what CAM partners were up to this week:

Spotlight

Follow Team Israel: While reports on Israel are often politically biased, the mission of Follow Team Israel social media pages put a spotlight on the lesser-known part of Israel: the sports scene.

By sharing stories of Israeli athletes and their participation in international matches, Follow Team Israel hopes to humanize not only the athletes that participate in these matches, but also the citizens of Israel as a whole.

Campaigns to Support

B’nai Brith Canada: A recently proposed petition in the House of Commons would ban the Canadian government for allocating funds to NGOs that incite Jew-hatred. 1,431 citizens have signed the petition, which also affirms the IHRA working definition of antisemitism.

B’nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn and National Director of its League for Human Rights Marvin Rotrand both support the petition for its potential to help the Jewish community in Canada from experiencing Jew-hatred and for utilizing IHRA to stop NGOs from “fan(ing) the flames of antisemitism.”

Upcoming Events

Fighting Online Antisemitism (FOA): Jewish communities around the world are being threatened by virulent antisemitism through verbal and even physical threats. Much of the battle, however, is online and can be found in all corners of the world.

On Thursday, June 16, Director of the Department for Combating Antisemitism and Holocaust Remembrance in the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ruth Cohen-Dar will provide her insight on the effort of the MFA to stop antisemitism both in Israel and abroad.

ISGAP: Oftentimes, the world does not hear of antisemitism in Eastern cultures. This Friday June 9th at 9 AM ET, China Research Fellow at Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security Tuvia Gering will provide his expertise on Chinese foreign policy in relation to Jew-hatred.

Partner Achievements

Artists4Israel: During the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, Artists4Israel sponsored the “Chalk Over Hate” campaign with 34 participating organizations, including @passagesisrael which publicly stands with the Jewish community and Israel.

Jews and non-Jews alike around the world are deeply concerned with the poisonous language that has become mainstream to demonize and delegitimize Jews.

World Jewish Congress (WJC): For the Diplomacy Summit at the beginning of June, the WJC brought 40 young members of the Robert S. Lauder Fellowship to meet with UNESCO, the EU Commission, NATO, and other international institutions located in Europe to discuss the rising concern of antisemitism across the European continent and proactive ways to combat antisemitic incidents as they continue to occur.

Yeshiva University: YU presented newly-confirmed U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt the inaugural Presidential Medallion of Exemplary Leadership at the university’s 91st commencement ceremony last week.

Unfortunately, many people do not know of the dark antisemitic beliefs that he spread and the award he received from Hitler himself.

Belgian Friends of Israel: With antisemitism permeating public life and daily discourse, grassroots organizations like BFoI are working to combat the narrative on the ground by building opportunities for dialogue about Jewish life and Israel to prevent the radicalization of the narrative against Jews and Israel.

Brandeis Center: With Jewish students being actively discriminated on campus for their religious and Zionist viewpoints, the Center has asked the US Department of Education to continue its oversight of antisemitism at New York University (NYU), which expired on Monday.

IMPACT-se: By monitoring school textbooks across the Middle East, IMPACT-SE reports that inciting antisemitic rhetoric appears in many school subjects, especially in PA-sanctioned governmental schools.

The United States State Department used this data to raise concern that radicalization against Jews on the ground is worse than anticipated and religious freedom rights are in danger if children are educated to not only hate, but to delegitimize Jewish existence.
