FBI Report: Jews Targeted in 58 Percent of Religiously-Motivated Hate Crimes in U.S. in 2020
Jews were the targets of 58 percent of all religiously-motivated hate crimes in the U.S. last year, according to a newly-released Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report.
In 2020, law enforcement agencies submitted incident reports to the FBI involving 7,759 criminal incidents and 10,532 related offenses as being motivated by bias toward race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and gender identity.
Of these, 4,939 attacks were motivated by race or ethnicity, 1,174 by religion, and 1,051 by sexual orientation.
In the religion category, 676 of the crimes were committed against Jews — nine percent of all hate crimes in the U.S. in 2020, even though Jews make up just two percent of the American population.
Only anti-Black, anti-White, and anti-LGBT incidents were more numerous than anti-Jewish ones.
In 2019, antisemitic incidents comprised 63 percent of all religiously-motivated hate crimes in the U.S., and 13 percent of hate crimes in total.
