Thinking Beyond the IHRA Definition
In a recent op-ed in the Times of Israel titled The IHRA Definition Isn’t Solving the Problem, Gary Sinyor, a British Television and Film Producer argues that Jews can say “Never Again” as a statement and not an aspiration, only because of the State of Israel. Without Israel, Sinyor declares, “you send Jews back into the same old religious persecution.” Sinyor notes that the Holocaust is just one example demonstrating centuries of religious slaughter directed at Jews. Subsequently, the idea of destroying the world’s Jewish refuge, the State of Israel, is itself anti-Semitic.
All commentary and debate about Israel’s history and the pros and cons of the nation are irrelevant. When it comes to anti-Semitism, the only argument that matters according to Sinyor is that “Israel is a state of refuge.” Perhaps to protect other persecuted peoples such as the Uighurs, the world needs more states of refuge, more Israels, not less.
