With Linguistic Tricks, Anti-Israel Activists Seek to Disguise Violent Antisemitic Incitement

CAM’s Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) has tracked a significant shift in rhetoric by anti-Israel activists in recent months, indicating adaptive tactics in efforts to demonize the Jewish state and incite antisemitism globally.

With the “Globalize the Intifada” hate slogan — a clear call to violence against Jews — drawing growing scrutiny worldwide, as well as legal bans in several UK and Australian jurisdictions, some demonstrators have started turning to the word “Muqawama” (Arabic for “resistance”) — equally dangerous in intent, but less widely recognized.

The term is not new, however. The Gaza-based Hamas terrorist organization, for example, calls itself as “Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya” (“The Islamic Resistance Movement”), while Hezbollah in Lebanon is known as “Al-Muqawamah al-Islamīyah fi Lubnan” (“The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon”).

As they rebrand their language, anti-Israel activists are not moderating their message, but rather disguising it, seeking to pursue the same extremist goals without reproach or consequence.

According to the ARC’s new annual data, more Jews were killed in hate-motivated attacks around the world in 2025 than in any single year in recent decades. That grave reality underscores why recognizing, calling out, and establishing accountability for linguistic tricks used to whitewash violent antisemitic incitement is critical at this moment in history.

Hatred must not be allowed to gain legitimacy simply by changing its name.

The ARC will continue to rigorously monitor the “Muqawama” trend, raise public awareness of the threat it poses to Jewish communities, and bring it to the attention of relevant decision and policymakers, as well as law enforcement agencies.

Examples of the “Muqawama” trend monitored by the ARC include:
