Mario Adolfo Búcaro Flores is a career diplomat who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guatemala from February 2022 to January 2024. He previously served as Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Guatemala to the United Mexican States, State of Israel, Republic of Bulgaria, and Republic of Cyprus.
During his Israel posting, Búcaro oversaw his country’s historic recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the opening of the Guatemalan Embassy there.
A Lawyer and Notary, he graduated from the Rafael Landívar Catholic University of Guatemala, and was formerly Professor and Dean of the Consular Corps accredited in Guatemala, former Honorary Consul of Georgia in Guatemala, former Dean of the Faculty of Law and Justice of the University of San Pablo de Guatemala, former President of the Board of Directors of the International Mediation Center of Guatemala and former Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Guatemalan-Mexican Chamber of Commerce. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Legal and Social Sciences and continued his legal training with a postgraduate degree in Private International Law from the University of Salamanca in Spain and a Master’s Degree in Corporate Law and Competitiveness from the National University of San Carlos de Guatemala. The Gusi Peace Prize International Foundation awarded the Gusi Peace Prize International 2019 to Búcaro for his contributions to world peace, respect for human life, dignity, and progress.
