Last Saturday’s annual San Diego Pride Parade was marred by open displays of antisemitism, including bloody hand symbols and a banner incorporating a Star of David into the the “terrorist.”
The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) also received numerous photographs showing keffiyeh-wearing marchers carrying Palestinian flags and signs accusing Israel of “genocide.”
In a letter sent to San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria this week, CAM Chief Government Affairs Officer Lisa Katz — who leads CAM’s work with North American mayors and is a former town supervisor of New Castle (New York) — noted, “While individuals have the right to express political views, Pride should never become a place where Jewish members of the LGBTQ+ community are targeted or made to feel unwelcome. They should not have to confront accusations of genocide, violent imagery, intimidation, or insults simply to participate in an event intended to celebrate inclusion.”
She continued, “We respectfully ask that you publicly condemn the antisemitic rhetoric present at this year’s parade and reaffirm that there is no place for hatred against Jews at one of San Diego’s signature celebrations. We also ask the City to establish clear, content-neutral standards governing permits, public support, and municipal partnerships for public events.”
“While fully respecting First Amendment rights, those standards should require organizations receiving City permits or support to prevent targeted harassment and intimidation by official performers, parade contingents, and other sanctioned participants,” Katz noted.
