Hate crimes in New York City jumped 15.8 percent this year, driven largely by offenses targeting Jewish residents, according to NYPD statistics released on Thursday.
The department recorded 425 hate crimes so far in 2026, up from 367 during the same period last year. Anti-Jewish offenses rose 8 percent and accounted for more than half of all confirmed hate crimes in the first eight months of the year, even though Jews make up just roughly 10 percent of the city’s population.
The figures arrived weeks before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The year-to-date increase comes amid violent antisemitic incidents, including the July stabbing of a Jewish man outside a synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, who is Jewish, called the trend “unconscionable.”
“I’m deeply troubled by the year-to-date rise in hate crimes and alarmed that half of those attacks targeted Jewish New Yorkers, even though our community represents only 10% of our city’s population,” Menin said.
She noted that her first initiative as speaker was a five-point plan to combat antisemitism, including a $1.25 million investment in Holocaust education.
Jewish community leaders have pointed to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rhetoric against Israel as a factor behind the surge. Mamdani has accused the Jewish state of committing “genocide” in Gaza and called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrest. The genocide charge against the world’s only Jewish state draws on centuries of blood libel against the Jewish people, recasting that ancient slander as an accusation against Israel.
The U.S. Justice Department has said it is actively investigating antisemitic crimes in New York City. It also sent Mamdani a letter demanding answers about what it described as the unequal treatment of Jewish residents.
“The Justice Department is taking antisemitism very seriously,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who leads the department’s Civil Rights Division.
