A restaurant owner in the Austrian town of Bad Hofgastein allegedly denied service to an Israeli family after discovering they were Jewish, according to a report published on Sunday by the Krone newspaper.
Lidan H., who withheld his full identity, said the owner, who is reportedly Muslim, asked where the family came from before telling them he would not sell them anything after learning they were Jewish.
“Because we are Jewish, that’s exactly what he told us,” H. said.
Rather than confront the owner, H. filed a complaint with the district administration, which said it had “initiated administrative penalty proceedings.”
Contacted by the newspaper, the owner rejected the allegations as “all nonsense” and declined further comment.
Elie Rosen, a Jewish community leader in Austria, said antisemitism was worsening and criticized the government’s response.
“I can no longer listen to these platitudes about antisemitism and how terrible it all is,” Rosen said. “Now we need more than regretful and empty words.”
Israeli Ambassador to Austria David Roet said, “These incidents cannot be viewed entirely in isolation from a climate in which antisemitism is increasingly normalized and false accusations against Israel are all too often left unchallenged. Families and children bear the consequences.”
