CAM Joins Muslim World League’s #RejectHate Social Media Campaign

The Combat Anti-Semitism Movement (CAM) has joined a new social media initiative launched by the Muslim World League (MWL) urging Facebook and Twitter to further restrict Islamophobic content on their platforms.

As part of the campaign, social media users are being called on to promote the hashtag #RejectHate and sign a Change.org petition.

While the MWL lauded recent policy changes banning Holocaust denial, it noted that much material targeting Muslims for their faith remained online.

“Facebook and Twitter can and must do better,” the petition declares. “Muslims continue to suffer personal abuse, threats, and physical violence fueled by content spread through social media. Islamophobia is a disease and social media is the incubator.”

Backers of the campaign can also use a new Facebook picture frame to show their support.

Last June, CAM honored MWL Secretary-General Sheikh Dr. Mohammed al-Issa with its inaugural Combat Anti-Semitism Award in recognition of his efforts to unite people of all faiths and fight religious intolerance, including by publicly denouncing Holocaust denial.

“Whereas Jews and Muslims lived centuries together, in these last decades we have sadly grown apart,” Al-Issa said at the time. “Now we must rebuild the bridges of dialogue and the bonds of partnership between our communities.”

Earlier last year, Al-Issa led a delegation of prominent Muslim leaders from around the globe on an unprecedented visit to the site of the former Auschwitz death camp in Poland pay their respects to the victims of the Nazis.
