A webinar hosted by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) on Tuesday explored how artificial intelligence and social media algorithms are accelerating the spread of antisemitism and extremism online.
The forum — titled “From Clicks to Convictions: How Do AI and Social Media Shape Antisemitism and Radicalization?” — featured: Dr. Lev Topor, Head of the Cybersecurity Program at the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo, Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP) Fellow, and Author of Synthetic Hate; and Veronica Stan, Senior Ministerial Officer on Combating Antisemitism at the European Commission.
The discussion was moderated by CAM Executive Director of European Affairs Shannon Seban, and was led off by a presentation of the latest findings of CAM’s Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) by Research Associate Oliver Marks.
Detailing a new ARC report showing antisemitic content was nearly seven times more likely to appear among an Instagram clip account’s most-viewed videos than other content, Marks noted, “In this new attention economy, antisemitism performs well.”
Topor argued that addressing AI-driven antisemitism would require an ecosystem of solutions rather than a single fix. “We need an ecosystem of solutions,” he said. “We must be wiser than AI.”
Stan highlighted the European Commission’s efforts to counter online radicalization through legislation, including the Terrorist Content Online Regulation and the Digital Services Act.
She also emphasized the need to pair regulation with secure AI development and positive online interventions.
