‘Get Hillel Off Campus’: Protesters Burn American Flag Outside University of Oregon Jewish Center

Demonstrators outside the University of Oregon’s Hillel in Eugene called for the Jewish organization to leave campus on Oct. 7, the third anniversary of the Hamas massacre.

During the protest, a man set fire to an American flag.

Masked protesters chanted “we will get Hillel off campus,” “Long live the Intifada” and “Glory to the martyrs of the al-Aqsa flood,” Hamas’s name for the October 7th massacre. They also shouted “Death to the IDF,” as well as “Death to U.S. imperialism.”

Video shows a man in a red keffiyeh chanting in Arabic as another ignites the flag. Two Israeli flags hang in the house’s windows and a sukkah stands outside, while protesters appear on the lawn, sidewalk and street.

The protest came days after posters targeted Lenny Steinberg, executive director of the Oregon Hillel Foundation, accusing him of supporting “the ongoing genocide in Palestine” and calling for the organization to be removed from campus.

The genocide accusation echoes the medieval blood libel — the false charge that Jews murdered Christian children for ritual purposes — recasting the Jewish state as a perpetrator of mass murder and its supporters as accomplices.

A newly-donated sukkah at Oregon State University was also stolen in late September.

In a statement Thursday night, Steinberg called the demonstration “harassment and intimidation” and “clearly antisemitic.” He wrote that Jewish students were commemorating the Oct. 7 victims in Corvallis during the protest. He thanked school leaders and Oregon lawmakers for their public support.

“But a statement is where accountability begins, not where it ends,: Steinberg wrote. “We expect the University of Oregon to hold students, faculty and staff responsible for intimidation and hate speech.”

“Oregon Hillel is not going anywhere,” he wrote, adding that the organization was working with law enforcement, the university, and private security to keep the community safe. “We will keep celebrating Shabbat, welcoming students, and building a community where no one has to face hatred alone.”
