The ongoing war between Hamas and Israel is a “conflict of terrorism versus civilization,” former President of Uruguay Julio María Sanguinetti recently told the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) in an interview.
Sanguinetti — who served as president of Uruguay from 1985-1990 and 1995-2000 — participated in the third annual Latin America-Israel Forum, hosted by CAM in November in Montevideo.
“Israel is a democratic state and Hamas is a terrorist organization, a freedom-denying organization, contemptuous of the status of women, that’s what it is,” Sanguinetti said.
“Hamas is a terrorist organization that usurps power,” he emphasized. “It usurps power in Gaza. Let us not forget that the Palestinian Authority ruled the West Bank and Gaza. It was ousted in a coup d’état carried out by Hamas [in 2007]. This terrorist organization broke in and began to dominate this people, this poor Palestinian people of Gaza, by tyranny.”
