Hooded Gang Launches Fireworks at London Synagogue on Rosh Hashanah

Two hooded teenagers launched fireworks toward Lauderdale Road Synagogue in west London on the second day of Rosh Hashanah.

They were part of a five-person group gathered outside the synagogue in Maida Vale. The Telegraph cited a community statement and security footage in reporting that the incident occurred at 3:23 p.m.

The Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi Community, which operates the synagogue, told members that nobody was inside when the fireworks were launched. It described them as “rocket fireworks” and reported no injuries or property damage.

Police and the Community Security Trust (CST), which protects Britain’s Jewish community, were alerted.

“Jewish families should be able to come together to celebrate Rosh Hashanah safely, openly and without fear,” said Rabbi Amir Ellituv of the synagogue, which was built in 1896.

He vowed that such incidents would not “deter us from coming together as a community.”

A CST spokesman told The Telegraph the organization was “aware of the incident.” Despite the absence of injuries or damage, he called it a “serious incident that will undoubtedly cause concern.”

“CST attended the scene and is in contact with the synagogue, and is working closely with the police to establish the full circumstances,” the spokesman said.

Last year, a terrorist attack at a Manchester synagogue left two people dead on Yom Kippur.
