Israeli Tourist Injured in Athens Amid Rising Antisemitic Hostility in Greece

A group of Palestinian men assaulted a pair of Israeli tourists on Saturday in central Athens, near the Monument to the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma Square, Greek police reported.

The confrontation began when the Palestinian men encountered a 30-year-old Israeli woman and a 29-year-old Israeli man. The altercation escalated, and police confiscated six plastic poles, including two with flags. Officers detained everyone involved and brought them to the Syntagma Police Station. Authorities said they will release further updates as the investigation continues.

Greece Sees Surge in Anti-Israel Protests

Israelis have long considered Greece a favored tourist destination. Yet since Hamas’s October 7 massacre, anti-Israel and antisemitic incidents have disrupted that relationship.

On August 10, activists staged protests across more than 100 Greek islands and cities, calling for a boycott of Israeli visitors. Flyers and banners distributed at the demonstrations declared, “Zionists not welcome.”

The incident followed protests on July 22 that forced the Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris to abandon its scheduled stop at Syros amid safety concerns, rerouting instead to Cyprus. Less than a week later, anti-Israel protesters in Rhodes again targeted the Crown Iris, attempting to block its docking; riot police intervened and passengers ultimately disembarked.

Israelis Targeted in Multiple Incidents

Hostility against Israelis in Greece has continued to mount. On July 23, N12 reported that Turkish nationals attacked a group of Israeli teenagers in Rhodes. Just days earlier, on July 12, anti-Israel protesters vandalized a new kosher restaurant in Athens.

These incidents reveal a troubling trend: Greece’s streets, ports, and cultural venues have become staging grounds for anti-Israel hostility. While the country still welcomes international tourism, Israelis now face growing risks abroad as anti-Israel incitement and antisemitic narratives spread across Europe.
