Man Arrested for Breaking into Synagogue in Worcester, MA

A man in central Massachusetts has been arrested for breaking into a synagogue in Worcester, Massachusetts and then returning again to attempt a second break in, the Boston Herald reported.

Last Thursday, Kyle Wood, 28, of Leicester, MA was arrested and charged with breaking and entering and vandalism, according to a statement from the Worcester Police Department. Police officers responded to a call from Temple Emanuel Sinai in Worcester last Wednesday about a reported break-in. Police found a broken window and some other damage to the synagogue’s property.

The following day, police responded to a call from the Jewish Community Center of Worcester, located on the same street as Temple Emanuel Sinai. Officers responded to a report of a man screaming at families who were dropping their children off at camp at the JCC. According to the police department, the man was kicking the Star of David on the property and was “threatening and out of control.” The offender also pulled a sign out of the lawn and threw it.

The offending man, however, left the scene before police officers arrived. A short while after the police responded to the scene at the JCC, officers received another report of a man attempting to break into Temple Emanuel Sinai again. When officers arrived at Temple Emanuel Sinai, they arrested Kyle Wood. It was not immediately clear when Wood’s arraignment would take place.

Temple Emanuel Sinai is a nearly 100-year-old Reform synagogue in the city of Worcester. Located in central Massachusetts, Worcester is the second largest city in New England. The Jewish community in central Massachusetts is estimated to be about 10,000 people. In April of this year, a Western Massachusetts man attempted to blow up a Jewish nursing home in the town of Longmeadow, about an hour’s drive southwest of Worcester.
