A U.S. postal worker has been charged after assaulting a four-year-old Hasidic boy in Monsey, New York.

The attack occurred Thursday at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Garden Terrace, off Viola Road, in Monsey, Rockland County. Surveillance footage shows the postal worker exiting his vehicle and forcefully shoving the child to the ground near a mailbox. The child stood nearby and posed no threat.

Authorities identified the suspect as a 39-year-old U.S. Postal Service employee from Stony Point. Police arrested him and filed initial charges of endangering the welfare of a child and attempted assault in the third degree. Prosecutors later upgraded the case, adding a felony charge of attempted assault in the second degree due to the victim’s age.

Witnesses said the suspect had been shouting at children in the area shortly before the assault. CCTV footage captured the incident and now forms the core of the investigation. Ramapo Police are leading the case with assistance from Chaverim of Rockland.

The child did not suffer serious physical injuries. The attack, however, has drawn condemnation from public officials. New York State Senator Bill Weber expressed “concern and outrage” and called for full prosecution. Congressman Mike Lawler demanded a “complete and thorough investigation,” describing the incident as “violence and abuse.”

The victim was a visibly identifiable Hasidic child in a neighborhood with a large Orthodox Jewish population. Authorities have not classified the assault as a hate crime. The circumstances, however, raise serious concerns about the safety of Jewish children in public spaces.

The investigation is ongoing.
