British authorities have charged two men with spying for Iran after they conducted surveillance targeting individuals and sites connected to London’s Jewish community..

Prosecutors identified the suspects as Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, a dual Iranian-British national, and Alireza Farasati, 22, an Iranian national. According to investigators, the two men monitored targets across north London over a sustained five-week period in July and August of last year, focusing specifically on Jewish-linked locations and individuals.

The charges were filed under the United Kingdom’s National Security Act following what officials described as an extensive and highly detailed counterterrorism investigation. Both men were arrested earlier this month and are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation began well before the current escalation in the Middle East, reinforcing longstanding warnings from British lawmakers and intelligence services about Iran’s activities inside the country.

In recent years, officials, including from MI5, have repeatedly identified Iran as a source of ongoing security concern, with multiple plots uncovered and disrupted.

Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, stressed the seriousness of the case. “These are extremely serious charges under the National Security Act, which have come about following what has been a very complex investigation,” she said. She added that the case should reassure Jewish communities that threats to their safety were being actively identified and addressed.

Police confirmed that two additional individuals detained during the same operation were later released without charge.

The charges place Iranian-linked activity targeting Jewish individuals and institutions firmly within the UK’s domestic security landscape, underscoring a sustained threat that cannot be ignored.
