The U.S. State Department is urging governments worldwide to strengthen security around synagogues and Jewish institutions before the High Holy Days, a senior American official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
“While the toxic hatred that is antisemitism is increasing around the world, the United States continues to call on governments to take decisive action to protect Jewish communities,” the official said.
Recently, the agency dispatched a cable to American missions across the globe, directing envoys to push local authorities for expanded safeguards at synagogues, community institutions, and holiday gatherings.
The directive instructs missions to seek the deployment of police units, counterterrorism teams, and, where warranted, military personnel at prayer sites and locations hosting holiday events.
Missions were also told to coordinate security briefings with local authorities, Jewish institutions, security organizations and businesses.
The cable also directs missions to ensure observant Jews can receive urgent security warnings during Shabbat and Jewish holidays without relying on electronic devices.
