‘There Is Neither Greek Nor Jew’: A Reception Honoring ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ Loukas Karrer and Dimitrios Chrysostomos for International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Just before International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) — along with B’nai B’rith International, the National Hellenic Society (NHS), the Hellenic American Women’s Council (HAWC), and the European March of the Living (EMOTL) — will co-host a virtual LIVE reception on Tuesday, January 25th, at 6 PM Greece time (11 AM EST), to honor the late Greek heroes Loukas Karrer and Dimitrios Chrysostomos ahead of the 44th anniversary of their “Righteous Among the Nations” designation by Yad Vashem.
This commemorative event will tell the story of the courageous efforts of Karrer and Chrysostomos to save the Jews of the Greek island of Zakynthos from the Nazis during World War II, and highlight its relevance to the contemporary fight against antisemitism.
Being held during the Greek Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), the event will also focus on the history of Hellenic-Jewish relations and the importance of strengthening these bonds at a time when antisemitism is again on the rise globally. Recognizing past figures who confronted antisemitism in its most extreme form is meant to inspire a new generation of civic and religious leaders to similarly stand up to antisemitism and other forms of hate.
The distinguished speakers list includes: Chair of the Greek IHRA Presidency Ambassador Chris J. Lazaris, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to the U.S. Her Excellency Alexandra Papadopoulou, CEO of B’nai Brith International Dan Mariaschin, Deputy Chief of the Israeli Diplomatic Mission to the Hellenic Republic Zach Saar, Head of the Righteous Among the Nations Department at Yad Vashem Dr. Joel Zisenwine, Member of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues U.S. Congressman Gus Bilirakis, Museum Director of Kehila Kedosha Janina Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos, Vice President of Hellenic American Women’s Council Dr. Ekaterini Malliou, Historian and Member of the Greek IHRA Delegation Dr. Leon Saltiel, Mayor of Ioannina Moses Elisaf, and Chairman of the European March of the Living Benjamin Albalas, among others.
Last year, more than 30,000 people from across the globe joined an International Holocaust Remembrance Day event — co-hosted by CAM and B’nai B’rith International — commemorating another “Righteous Among the Nations” honoree, the late Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara.
