At a time of ever-increasing antisemitism, the virtual world of video games has become a breeding ground for extremism and hatred.
Simultaneously, the Holocaust education space is beginning to grapple with the stark reality that there are increasingly fewer and fewer survivors alive to present their first-person narrative of the Holocaust. Some day soon there will no longer be any Holocaust survivors left to tell their story.
Seeking to address both of these issues, the prevalence of antisemitism in online video game communities and adapting Holocaust education for a post-survivor world, acclaimed video game designer Luc Bernard created “Light in the Darkness,” an immersive, first-person perspective video game that allows players to learn about the Holocaust through the eyes of a French Jewish family who were a part of the 1942 Vel d’Hiv round-up.
In a webinar hosted by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) on Wednesday, September 6, from 1:00-2:30 PM ET, Bernard will demonstrate how his video game can be an effective tool for the next generation of Holocaust education while preventing the video game community from being drawn into the rampant antisemitism that exists online.
The demonstration will be followed by two panels bringing together experts in the field of online extremism and an examination of the present and future of Holocaust education. Throughout, they will discuss how “Light in the Darkness” and other like-minded efforts can be of great benefit to the fight against antisemitism.
Participants will include Adviser on Technology and Law at the Center for Business and Human Rights Policy Mariana Olaizola Rosenblat, President of 3GNY Dave Reckess, Director for Combating Antisemitism and Holocaust Remembrance at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ruty Cohen Dar, and Holocaust Educator Adi Rabinowitz Bedein.
The webinar — titled “Changing the Narrative: Video Games as Tools for Holocaust Education and Antisemitism Prevention” — will conclude with a live audience Q&A.
