The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights held a hearing on Wednesday on the topic of “Hidden in Plain Sight: Confronting the Muslim Brotherhood Network in America.”
Witnesses included: Retired FBI Special Agent and Senior Research Fellow at the George Washington University Program on Extremism Lara Burns; National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) Senior Litigation Counsel Arielle F. Klepach; and Senior Analyst for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism at the Center for Security Policy Kyle Shideler.
Subcommittee Chairman Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said, “I held a hearing today in which experts established that the Muslim Brotherhood and DSA communists are united by a shared hatred of America, Israel, Western civilization, capitalism, and democracy, and a revolutionary objective to overthrow the U.S. Constitution. That is why this issue is so critical.”
“The Brotherhood’s American network has spent decades building influence inside our nonprofits, political organizations, universities, courts, and taxpayer-funded programs,” he noted.

The hearing was boycotted by all five Democratic members of the subcommittee — Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Peter Welch (D-VT) — who claimed its purpose was “scapegoating Muslims.”
In a statement ahead of the hearing, the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) said, “The boycott by Senate Democrats of today’s Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on the Muslim Brotherhood network in the United States is both indefensible and deeply concerning. Turning a blind eye to this global terror-linked network and its growing presence in this country only emboldens extremists and undermines American national security.”
“Recognizing and confronting this threat is necessary for keeping all Americans, including the Jewish community, safe,” CAM added. “We fear arguments this hearing is targeting any single faith community are not being made in good faith. We urge every member of the Senate Judiciary Committee to show up, engage, and demonstrate that Congress takes the fight against foreign-linked extremism seriously, regardless of where it originates.”
