Tragedy struck in Germany on Yom Kippur. Two people were shot dead in the city of Halle by a neo-Nazi gunman outside a synagogue as dozens of Jews prayed inside. The perpetrator sought to enter the synagogue but security measures in place helped to “withstand the attack,” which was live-streamed by the gunman.        Read Here

1. SUPPORTING HOLOCAUST EDUCATION

This week we ask you to take action by supporting Holocaust education. In its mission to bring Holocaust education to as many people as possible, our partner, the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation, is kicking off a campaign to create an endowment to allow for the upkeep, greening, and security of The Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza, the oldest Holocaust memorial in the U.S. The PHRF will also be conducting educational programming such as teacher trainings. Their endowment goal is $9 million. They welcome donations of any amount and encourage people to watch their powerful new video (below), to visit the website and, of course, the Plaza itself. Anti-Semitism is once again on the rise, just 75 years after the Holocaust. This irrational hatred of Jews and the world’s only Jewish state harms both innocent victims and perpetrators infected by bigotry. The resurgence of anti-Semitism poses a challenge to all people of conscience:

1. VANDALS SMASH WINDOWS OF BROOKLYN SYNAGOGUE DURING ROSH HASHANAH PRAYERS

The windows of the Rivnitz synagogue in Brooklyn were smashed by vandals during Rosh Hashanah services. A video showed people throwing milk crates at the synagogue in Williamsburg. Police said they were searching for two females who were seen in the video.    Read Here 

2. SWASTIKA FOUND ON CAR IN BOROUGH PARK

Police say an investigation is underway after a swastika was found etched into a car in the heavily Jewish neighborhood of Borough Park. According to the Williamsburg News, the vehicle belongs to a member of Hatzolah, a Jewish emergency medical service. The hate crimes unit has been notified. Read Here 

A swastika was found in an apartment building in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Borough Park by an elderly couple in a hallway; the husband is a Holocaust survivor from Hungary. The New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force is reportedly investigating the matter. Read Here

4. TEEN ALLEGEDLY ATTACKS JEWISH WOMAN IN BROOKLYN, PULLING OFF HER WIG

Police said a Jewish woman reported being harassed in Brooklyn on Rosh Hashanah. She was approached by a female teenager who “pulled her scarf and wig from her head.” The perpetrator was accompanied by another teenager. The police’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating. Read Here

White supremacist propaganda was found at Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem, NC and on an online blog naming the synagogue. Officials at Temple Emanuel are enhancing their security for the High Holy Days in response to the discovery. Read Here

Literature spouting anti-Semitism circulated around to multiple businesses in Whitefish, Montana. The fliers contained white nationalist references. The Montana Human Rights Network believes the fliers were dropped off specifically on Rosh Hashanah. Watch Here for more information.  Read Here

Multiple swastikas were found on a popular bridge in Rock Valley, Iowa. The City of Rock Valley said that the swastikas were spray-painted in white on the Kiwanis Bridge’s poles and drawn in blue chalk along the pavement. Read Here

8. OHIO MAN INDICTED ON FEDERAL CHARGES FOR THREATENING SHOOTING AT JCC

James Reardon of New Middletown, Ohio was indicted in US District Court with one count of transmitting an interstate communication threat and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, for using a firearm while making threats against the Youngstown Jewish Community Center in a video posted on social media. 13. $4 MILLION OUTLAY FOR STEPPED-UP SECURITY INITIATIVE

In response to fatal attacks at synagogues in the US and a spike in anti-Semitic attacks on Jews in NYC, UJA-Federation of New York announced a new $4 million initiative to upgrade security at Jewish institutions. 14. TWO MEN ARRESTED FOR SWASTIKA GRAFFITI ON NY MASONIC LODGE

Anthony Dean, 20, and Gaven Wasson, 18 were arrested for spray-painting anti-Semitic graffiti on a Masonic Lodge sign in Queensbury, N.Y., which included a swastika. Jewish students at the University of Nottingham have called for a speaking invitation to Chris Williamson to be withdrawn, citing the politician’s “history of Jew baiting.” The university’s Centre for British Politics invited him to speak as part of a series on “British Politics in Crisis.” The MP was suspended from the Labour party after video emerged of him saying Labour had been “too apologetic” regarding anti-Semitism. At least three college campuses in Albany, NY were vandalized with stickers associated with a white nationalist organization. Campus security staff at Siena College, the College of Saint Rose, and Hudson Valley Community College are working with local and state law enforcement to identify at least two suspected perpetrators who were caught on camera. Liberal institutions take pride in how they protect everyone and let everyone express their voice, citing their deep moral obligation to these values. In practice, this infinite inclusivity allows the malignment of various groups, and in this case, the Jews. There were 834 acts of anti-Semitism in 2018. 71% of the incidents occurred online with 27% of the anti-Semitic content online had xenophobic connotations against Jews, 18% were fueled by events taking place in the Middle East, 17% used Nazi symbolism, while others drew from conspiracies about Jewish world domination and other related misconceptions. President Trump hosted a call with Jewish community leaders ahead of the high holidays in which he said: “As I said in my recent address to UN, America will never tolerate anti-Semitic hate. Our entire nation was stricken with shock and grief and righteous anger when two horrific anti-Semitic murderers attacked synagogues in California and Pennsylvania. To every survivor, family member and to the entire Jewish community, all of America embraces you with love. We pledge our undying and total resolve to excise the vile poison of anti-Semitism from our world.”

To clear the air of the anti-Semitism that pervaded the UN, we launched a long but justified battle. We have led proposals for resolutions that were voted on in the General Assembly and designed to isolate nations that support terrorism, and to block anti-Israel declarations. We have not allowed the rise of modern anti-Semitism to go ignored. The General Assembly was summoned for a special session to discuss the fight against anti-Semitism, and a proposed resolution to condemn anti-Semitic crimes was passed. Read Here

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon held his first working meeting with new US Ambassador Kelly Craft. The two discussed strengthening cooperation between the two countries, and steps that can be taken in the Security Council against Iran and its proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah. Read Here

John Mann, the British government’s new anti-Semitism adviser vowed that those responsible for spreading hatred against the Jewish people will face the “most robust consequences”. Mr. Mann spoke of the “dichotomy” of “how not to overstate the problem so people become irrationally fearful of their everyday existence while at the same time not understating the problem.” Read Here

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed to protect Jews against anti-Semitism in the UK, in a video message to Jews ahead of Rosh Hashanah. “I will always be there to defend you against the shameful anti-Semitism that we are increasingly seeing, and which is such a terrible blight on our country.” Read Here

London’s Muslim mayor Sadiq Khan wished a happy Rosh Hashanah to the city’s Jewish community, saying they “should celebrate and be proud of the enormous way [they] contribute to making London the greatest city in the world…I know it is also a worrying time. Anti-Semitic incidents have hit a record high…We know from our history that we ignore these incidents at our peril. And where anti-Semitism can lead when left to fester. British Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid reiterated his support for the Jewish state at a Conservative Friends of Israel meeting. More than 130,000 descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled en masse from Spain in 1492 have requested Spanish citizenship in the past four years, after a deadline for applications expired. For the past four years, Spain allowed the Sephardim to apply to become Spanish nationals without giving up their current citizenship. Read Here

Singer Celine Dion announced her first-ever concert in Israel in a video message in which she also wished the Jewish state a happy new year ahead of Rosh Hashanah. “Shana tova Israel,” the Canadian artist, 51, said. “I can’t wait to see you all for the very first time in Tel Aviv. Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Washington put out “a happy and sweet new year” greeting this year. UAE Foreign Minister also wrote a “Shana Tovah” greeting on Twitter. These examples are small signs of increasing willingness of countries in the Middle East to express tolerance to Jews. Read Here

A plan to build a museum focused on the Holocaust and Nevada survivors of genocide is one step closer to reality.
