THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL ANTISEMITISM REPORT

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a package of bills to “honor and support Holocaust survivors in educational, cultural, and financial institutions.” The new laws will “help ensure schools are providing high-quality Holocaust education” and “require museums to acknowledge art stolen by the Nazi regime.”

Municipal leaders in Tampa, Florida and Nashville, Tennessee condemned recent acts of antisemitism, and the Australian state of New South Wales officially banned public displays of the Nazi swastika.

A man set fire to a mattress at the entrance of a synagogue in Bremerhaven, Germany, a Jewish memorial in Freiburg, Germany was vandalized with pro-Hitler graffiti, and a German court sentenced two minors for a violent attack on a Jewish man during a pro-Israel vigil last year.

A court in Paris suspended the deportation of a Moroccan imam accused of posing a threat to society by promoting antisemitism and sexism. Princess Hend bint Faisal Al-Qasimi, an Emirati royal, compared the Holocaust to the deaths of Muslims in various wars, claiming Jews leveraged the Nazi genocide for sympathy and victimhood. The royal also promoted the antisemitic myth that Jews control global affairs in her criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza.

In London, a spree of vandalism targeting Jewish shops continued, and two Jewish women were assaulted by another woman who used a rod as a weapon.

A New York City subway rider was choked by a stranger who shouted antisemitic invective, and the judge who signed and FBI warrant for Mar-A-Lago has been receiving violent antisemitic threats.

By LARRY CELONA AND TINA MOORE

Two female straphangers were the victims of separate hate crimes in the city in as many days, cops said Tuesday. One of the women was choked by a stranger who made anti-Semitic remarks to her in an Upper East Side subway station Tuesday morning, cops said. The suspect approached the 44-year-old woman on the platform of the No. 6 train around 11:20 a.m. and made anti-Jewish remarks while putting his hands around her neck and squeezing, cops said. The woman was taken to Mt. Sinai for treatment of her injuries, police sources said. The hateful attack came one day after a woman was punched repeatedly in the face by a stranger who sneered, “I hate Mexicans” on a Brooklyn subway, cops said. The 41-year-old victim boarded the northbound Q train at the Newkirk Avenue station around 8:45 a.m. Monday and was talking on her phone when a woman sat down next to her, cops said.

HANOVER, VIRGINIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS APOLOGIZE FOR SWASTIKA-ISH LOGO

By DAVID ISRAEL

Hanover County Public Schools Superintendent Michael Gill apologized on Wednesday for a logo on t-shirts his organization had distributed to participants in a conference earlier this week. While county school officials did not catch the swastika-ish appearance of their new logo unveiled at their professional learning conference for faculty and staff and printed on shirts for them to wear, folks on the social networks caught on pretty quickly. Rachel Anne Levy, teacher, parent, and a candidate this November for the Virginia House of Delegates, was one of the early ones, tweeting: “Yes, I have seen the Hanover Schools new swastika-like logo. Sigh. Let’s hope an explanation and apology comes soon.”

THIS AMERICAN RABBI FIGHTS JEWISH STEREOTYPES VIA CHINA’S VERSION OF TIKTOK

By JORDYN HAIME

With two degrees in Asian studies and 15 years of his life spent living and working in China (everything “from acting to the diamond business to real estate”), Rabbi Matt Trusch has a lot of experience with China. But antisemitism wasn’t one of those experiences until he began posting on Douyin, China’s TikTok, from his home back in Texas in 2021. Speaking in fluent Mandarin peppered with Chinese idioms and filmed in front of a bookshelf lined with Jewish texts, Trusch passionately shares Jewish parables from the Talmud and the Tanya — a book of Hasidic commentary by the rabbi who founded the Chabad Orthodox movement — and the life and business lessons they may offer Chinese viewers. With nearly 180,000 followers, his videos have accumulated nearly 700,000 likes.

The three clips are available on the BBC‘s educational website, Bitesize. In the first video, titled “How Do Jewish People Show Care?,” Ella introduces herself, saying, “Hi. I’m Ella and I’m Jewish. My synagogue is where my family goes to worship. But it’s also where we have lots of community events. There’s a nursery and a school and different kinds of activities every week. We also try to help people in need because that’s really important in Judaism.” Later in the clip, she explains the concepts of tzedakah and tikkun olam.
