THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL ANTI-SEMITISM REPORT

Dear Friends,

An almost equal share of reported antisemitic incidents this week originated from the far-left and the extreme right – highlighting the importance of combating antisemitism across the ideological spectrum. CAM Senior Advisor Brig. Gen. (Res) Sima Vaknin Gill expounds upon the growing challenge of fighting expressions of antisemitism within the progressive movement.

This week, a man in Union City, New Jersey was charged for setting fire to a synagogue and yeshiva, while an Orthodox Jewish man was randomly assaulted with a piece of furniture on a Brooklyn street. A new report stated that hate crimes against the Los Angeles Jewish community – the third largest in the world – has increased nearly 60% so far in 2021

A group of students at Syracuse University were pelted with eggs while antisemitic slurs were yelled at them. In Germany, children’s graves were desecrated at a Jewish cemetery, and a Holocaust memorial was vandalized twice in Grenoble, France.

At the 7th Global Forum Forum for Combating Antisemitism, CAM convened a special panel of municipal leaders to share best practices for combating antisemitism at the local level, and Israel’s President Isaac Herzog warned against the upcoming UN Durban IV conference on racism, for promoting Jew-hatred. Nine countries, have so far announced boycotts – primarily nations that have adopted the IHRA working definition of antisemitism – a key indicator of a country’s willingness to tackle resurgent Jew-hatred.

Meanwhile, Facebook unveiled a new tool to combat Holocaust denial in 12 of the most-spoken languages. Last Sunday, thousands of people united in solidarity against antisemitism at the cross-communal ‘No Fear: Rally in Solidarity with the Jewish People’ in front of the US Capital Building. Smaller solidarity rallies took place in three other cities.

CAM’s weekly global antisemitism report highlights 32 new media reports of antisemitic incidents, including 10 (31%) from the far-right and 9 (28%) from the far-left, as well as 6 (19%) with Islamist motivations, and 7 (21%) unidentifiable in nature.

CAM CONVENES MAYORS, COMMUNITY LEADERS TO SHARE BEST PRACTICES DURING CAM PANEL AT 7TH GLOBAL FORUM FOR COMBATING ANTISEMITISM

Prominent mayors, municipal leaders and Jewish community experts from North America, Europe, and Israel jointly called for more concrete action in the fight against antisemitism and shared best practices for combating Jew-hatred in local communities. The participants took part in a specially convened panel entitled ‘Eradicating Antisemitism from our Streets: Tangible Solutions to Combat Antisemitism at the Local Level,’ hosted by, the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) as part of the 7th Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism, organized by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which took place in Jerusalem.

PROGRESSIVE DISCOURSE IS ‘CANCELLING’ THE FIGHT AGAINST ANTISEMITISM

The sheer intensity of antisemitic incidents has abated, but nobody should be lulled into a false sense of security. Far from it. In fact. progressive circles are in danger of accepting a pernicious ‘new normal’ in which the battle against Jew-hatred is being ‘cancelled.’ As a result, they are fanning the fire of antisemitism.

THOUSANDS GATHER AT U.S. CAPITOL FOR ‘NO FEAR’ RALLY AGAINST ANTISEMITISM

Around 3,000 people from across the religious and political spectrum gathered on the National Mall in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, in a powerful display of unity against rising antisemitism. The “NO FEAR: A Rally in Solidarity with the Jewish People” — of which the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) was a proud co-sponsor — was organized following the disturbing surge of Jew-hatred worldwide that accompanied the Israel-Gaza flare-up in May, which included physical assaults, vandalism, verbal harassment, and hate speech targeting Jews and Jewish institutions across the globe.

B’nai Brith Canada is alarmed by the increasing frequency with which the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) turns a blind eye towards violence against Jews, both in Canada and beyond. NDP MP and Critic for Ethics Charlie Angus hailed Khalida Jarrar as a “human rights campaigner,” and called for her release from Israeli jail. In fact, Jarrar is the senior political leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a designated terrorist entity in Canada that has murdered hundreds of people, including Canadian citizens.  Read Here

The ancestry of the son of a Jewish refugee in the Democratic Republic of Congo has emerged as a flashpoint for a political crisis that is threatening the integrity of the massive African country. The crisis came to a head when lawmakers loyal to President Tshiseked introduced a bill that would restrict the presidency to those with two Congolese parents. It’s a  move against Moise Katumbi, one of Congo’s most popular politicians, whose father was a Greek Jew who fled the Holocaust and settled in Congo, where he married a local woman. Read Here

FRANKLIN AND MARSHALL ALUMNI LETTER BACKS FACULTY CONDEMNATION OF ISRAEL’S ‘JEWISH SUPREMACY’

By Dion J. Pierre

A volley of community statements on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict resumed at Franklin & Marshall College, when over 130 alumni endorsed a hotly-debated faculty expression of “solidarity with Palestine,” criticizing university administrators’ response to it. The letter was in support of a faculty statement that said, “The brutal system that controls Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories is ideologically founded upon Jewish supremacy… and is practically committed to territorial theft from Palestinians who continue to resist physical removal and existential erasure.”

HERZOG SAYS UPCOMING UN DURBAN CONFERENCE ON RACISM PROMOTES HATE

The upcoming United Nations conference on racism is “a gathering of hatred and slander, an antisemitic event in the worst sense,” President Isaac Herzog said at the opening of the Global Forum to Combat Antisemitism in Jerusalem. Herzog called for countries and organizations to join together by acting “decisively, unanimously, and fearlessly” against September’s Durban IV conference to ensure it does not take place.

BRITISH JEWS TO GET APOLOGY 800 YEARS AFTER ANTISEMITIC LAWS THAT LED TO THEIR EXPULSION

By PHILISSA CRAMER

The Church of England is planning a formal “act of repentance” for next year, the 800th anniversary of the Synod of Oxford, a set of laws that restricted Jews’ rights to engage with Christians in England. The laws ultimately led to the expulsion of England’s Jews in 1290. In planning the formal apology, the Church of England is taking responsibility for Christian antisemitism that predates its founding in 1534.
