New York University senior, Adela Cojab, discusses the “extreme anti-Semitism” that has been allowed to fester on NYU’s campus, ultimately leading her to file a complaint with the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. In her complaint, Cojab details how NYU’s chapter of Students for Justice In Palestine “has caused Jewish and pro-Israel students to feel unwelcome and unsafe,” citing SJP’s violent protest at a pro-Israel gathering in Washington Square Park last spring. Is there a country in the world that attracts as much criticism as Israel? How much of this is a cover for the age-old hatred of the Jews? Those opposed to the idea, defined Zionism as a 19th century “political ideology,” when in fact Zionism has been a key component of Jewish identity dating back to the beginning of Judaism. This podcast demonstrates why it is necessary to distinguish between those who genuinely seek co-existence and those whose main goal is to destroy the Jewish state by having a single state from the “river to the sea,” where the “right of return” will erase the Jewish character of the state. According to Prof. Monika Schwarz-Friesel of the Technical University of Berlin, anti-Semitism was never really gone – it mutated into new forms, among which Israel-related anti-Semitism became the most pervasive and influential.

• The BDS movement has made Jew-hatred respectable again by whitewashing it as criticism of Israel. Israel-related anti-Semitism and its massive popular impact have been ignored.
• Anti-Semitism on the internet has grown significantly (as high as 22%). We encounter Jew-hatred everywhere on the web, not only in spaces specifically dedicated to radical ideas.
• We must dismiss the wrong but popular idea that contemporary anti-Semitism equals racism or xenophobia. Anti-Semitism is rooted in Christianity’s attempt to dismiss the Jewish basis it evolved from. As such, it has been an integral part of Western civilization for 2,000 years, deeply shaping the ways in which people think and feel.
• Comprehending this unique character of Jew-hatred as a cultural category sui generis rather than as one form of prejudice among others is a precondition to challenging it successfully.

Curiously, the press and pundits pontificating about the Bahrain Conference have largely omitted the history of earlier failed proposals. Perhaps this is because those failures raise uncomfortable truths. The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy Magazine, and others reported on the PA’s refusal to participate, but failed to note that it was in keeping with a long history of Palestinians rejecting opportunities for peace.

The PA has refused US and Israeli offers for a Palestinian state in 2000 at Camp David, 2001 at Taba, and 2008 after the Annapolis Conference. This trend is not recent. Palestinian leaders have refused opportunities for statehood going back to the 1930s: rejecting the recommendations of the 1937 Peel Commission Report, the 1947 Partition Plan, and efforts following the 1967 Six-Day War and the Camp David Agreement with Egypt. When CAMERA tried to set the record straight after several articles implied that Israel was targeting civilians at the Gaza border—articles that referred to violent rioters as “peaceful protesters”—the corrections’ editor defended their choice of terms and said a correction was not warranted, saying they were demonstrators across the board, even if some were violent. “When a newspaper standards editor twists herself into a pretzel to defend their biased reporting, we see how deeply entrenched is this anti-Semitism that masquerades as criticism of Israel.”

CAMERA also detailed growing anti-Semitism on college campuses, saying that Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapters across the United States have shared anti-Semitic literature, trying to hide it under the guise of anti-Zionism. “Their mistakes have ‘revealed their true colors,’ showing examples of SJP using actual Nazi imagery. U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo begins a four-day trip to Latin America in Argentina, where he will attend a counterterrorism conference and mark the anniversary of the country’s worst terrorist attack on a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires in 1994. Special Envoy Carr held meetings in the United Kingdom last week to meet with Jewish community leaders and government officials about the rise in anti-Semitism taking place in the United Kingdom as well as ways to tackle it. Special Envoy Carr hosted a roundtable for community leaders with the Board of Deputies of British Jews at the US Embassy in London. The Special Envoy also met with the Community Security Trust to discuss their work protecting the Jewish community.

While on his recent trip to the UK, Elan Carr sat down with British journalist Jonny Gould to discuss issues of free speech, protected and unprotected speech plus where he sees the role of the IHRA definition of antisemitism in the future protections of Jewish people. Listen Here.

This week Special Envoy Carr sat down for a discussion with the Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Anti-Semitism at the State Department. The Special Envoy briefed members of Congress from both sides of the aisle about the Special Envoy’s critically important mandate to fight anti-Semitism across the globe.

I feel eternal gratitude towards the republic, the first in the world to grant Jews emancipation. Unfortunately, it is to my regret that France sometimes finds it difficult to realize its beautiful values. France finds it hard to wage an effective battle against rising anti-Semitism, in its new embodiment in the hatred of Israel, which has resulted in the murder of 12 French Jews. The Aug. 7 event “The Time Is Now: Millennials Fighting Back Against Anti-Semitism,” will be led by Jewish National Fund CEO Russell Robinson. Samuel, a member of the Denver Jewish community, arrived early for a scheduled appointment with Ron, an African-American stylist. Ron’s client, noticing Samuel’s yarmulke, became instantly aggravated and embarked on a hateful tirade against Judaism and Jewish people, questioning whether Jewish people should be allowed to live in America. Without a hesitation, Ron resolutely expressed his revulsion for this man’s hatred and ordered his client to leave the salon and never return. Read Here.

Rabbi Jeffrey Myers of the Tree of Life synagogue said that the wave of hate will only end when racists feel ostracized, as he opened a ministerial-level meeting at the State Department on religious freedom. Read Here.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Unanimously Passes Anti-BDS Resolution

The resolution, H.R. 246, condemns the BDS movement for engaging in “efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel” and undermining prospects of peace with its opposition to a two-state solution. Resolution Co-sponsor, Rep. Lee Zeldin praised the committee’s passing of the resolution to opposing BDS “which is a blatantly anti-Israel & anti-Semitic effort that targets Israel & the Jewish people.” Read here.
