Analysis
(7 pieces)
Anti-Semitism has been perpetrated over the centuries. Today, we are seeing age-old anti-Semitic stereotypes being recycled as well as new forms of anti-Semitism. In order to effectively combat anti-Semitism, it is important to understand, define and highlight all its manifestations and ideologies.
1. The New Anti-Semitism
By Yaroslav Trofimov
When France’s Yellow Vests began to protest, it was about President Macron’s decision to raise fuel taxes. Within a few months, it also started to be about Jews. “Latent anti-Semitism is being activated…” This change comes after an unusual, postwar golden age that Jewish communities enjoyed across Western Europe and the U.S… After the horrors of the Holocaust, a commitment to minority rights, religious freedom, an inclusive vision of nationhood and a human-rights-based liberalism seemed to be the bedrock of political life in Western democracies. 5. How anti-Zionists legitimize anti-Semitism
By Jonathan S. Tobin
Jews were attacked for many reasons over the centuries. But today, Israel, its people and supporters are the stand-in for hateful Jewish stereotypes of the past. The arguments against Israel are straight out of the traditional anti-Semitic playbook, including themes about Jews buying power, congressional support, false accusations of dual loyalty etc. They are rooted in a kind of demonization of Jews that is all too familiar. Read Here.

6. Jewish people are being shut out of the debate on their own suffering – it can’t continue
By Benjamin Kentish
In the debate about anti-Semitism, Jewish voices are marginalized, their views ignored, their pleas dismissed. Instead, they must watch as the usual faces – professional commentators, columnists, politicians, none of them Jewish – take to the airwaves to talk about the suffering of Jews. Read Here.
7. Podcast: Anti-Zionism is Anti-Semitism
By Intelligence Squared
Is there a country in the world that attracts as much criticism as Israel? How much of this is a cover for the age-old hatred of the Jews? Those opposed to the idea, defined Zionism as a 19th century “political ideology,” when in fact Zionism has been a key component of Jewish identity dating back to the beginning of Judaism. This podcast demonstrates why it is necessary to distinguish between those who genuinely seek co-existence and those whose main goal is to destroy the Jewish state by having a single state from the “river to the sea,” where the “right of return” will erase the Jewish character of the state. This would deny the right of Jews to self-determination, a key component of Jewish identity, and thus a form of anti-Semitism. Listen Here.

1. BERLIN PROFESSOR: CONTEMPORARY ANTI-SEMITISM IS NOT RACISM OR XENOPHOBIA
By MARC NEUGROSCHEL
According to Prof. Monika Schwarz-Friesel of the Technical University of Berlin, anti-Semitism was never really gone – it mutated into new forms, among which Israel-related anti-Semitism became the most pervasive and influential.
- The BDS movement has made Jew-hatred respectable again by whitewashing it as criticism of Israel. Israel-related anti-Semitism and its massive popular impact have been ignored.
- Anti-Semitism on the internet has grown significantly (as high as 22%). We encounter Jew-hatred everywhere on the web, not only in spaces specifically dedicated to radical ideas.
- We must dismiss the wrong but popular idea that contemporary anti-Semitism equals racism or xenophobia. Anti-Semitism is rooted in Christianity’s attempt to dismiss the Jewish basis it evolved from. As such, it has been an integral part of Western civilization for 2,000 years, deeply shaping the ways in which people think and feel.
- Comprehending this unique character of Jew-hatred as a cultural category sui generis rather than as one form of prejudice among others is a precondition to challenging it successfully.

1. CAMERA OP-ED: THE BAHRAIN CONFERENCE AND THE BIG OMISSION
By SEAN DURNS
Curiously, the press and pundits pontificating about the Bahrain Conference have largely omitted the history of earlier failed proposals. Perhaps this is because those failures raise uncomfortable truths. The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy Magazine, and others reported on the PA’s refusal to participate, but failed to note that it was in keeping with a long history of Palestinians rejecting opportunities for peace.
The PA has refused US and Israeli offers for a Palestinian state in 2000 at Camp David, 2001 at Taba, and 2008 after the Annapolis Conference. This trend is not recent. Palestinian leaders have refused opportunities for statehood going back to the 1930s: rejecting the recommendations of the 1937 Peel Commission Report, the 1947 Partition Plan, and efforts following the 1967 Six-Day War and the Camp David Agreement with Egypt. Read here.
2. Is anti-Semitism becoming mainstream? Experts see alarming trend in media, campus and public life
By Josh Hasten
When CAMERA tried to set the record straight after several articles implied that Israel was targeting civilians at the Gaza border—articles that referred to violent rioters as “peaceful protesters”—the corrections’ editor defended their choice of terms and said a correction was not warranted, saying they were demonstrators across the board, even if some were violent. “When a newspaper standards editor twists herself into a pretzel to defend their biased reporting, we see how deeply entrenched is this anti-Semitism that masquerades as criticism of Israel.”
CAMERA also detailed growing anti-Semitism on college campuses, saying that Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapters across the United States have shared anti-Semitic literature, trying to hide it under the guise of anti-Zionism. “Their mistakes have ‘revealed their true colors,’ showing examples of SJP using actual Nazi imagery. The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America is a media-monitoring, research and membership organization devoted to promoting accurate and balanced coverage of Israel and the Middle East. “Combat anti-Semitism (CAS) is a non-partisan international grassroots movement of individuals and organizations, across all religions and creeds, united to combat anti-Semitism. CAS attempts to expose anti-Semitic activity in the world today from across the ideological spectrum and highlights those working to fight against its resurgence. One of the most pernicious forms of modern anti-Semitism is the effort to deny the Jewish people their right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland, Israel and to delegitimize, if not eliminate the profound historic, religious and cultural connection of the Jewish people to Israel, which is an integral pillar of Jewish identity. Humanity flourishes when religious and cultural diversity is respected and we hope to encourage understanding so tragedies like the Holocaust or any incidents of hate inspired violence never happen again.”
