Authorities are investigating three acts of arson at Chabad houses in Massachusetts in what appear to be the latest in a troubling string of anti-Semitic incidents. The home of Rabbi Avi Bukiet at the Chabad Center in Arlington, MA was targeted by an arsonist on May 11 and again last Thursday, while another fire was intentionally set at the Chabad Center in Needham, MA about one hour later Thursday night, officials said. Worshippers at a Lakeview East synagogue noticed broken glass on their way to Sunday morning services but didn’t think anything of it. Later that morning, they saw charred rags and realized there had been an arson attempt on Anshe Sholom B’nai Israel Congregation. Police were contacted after “several incendiary devices” were found. Last week, a soccer game in Foxboro, MA took place with a unique goal: fighting hatred. The New England Revolution played the Chelsea Football Club with proceeds going toward fighting anti-Semitism. Students and staff at Pennsylvania Jewish schools went to the state capital to ask lawmakers for help paying for security measures by including non-public schools in a $60 million school security grant program. It is a conversation that is growing nationwide – New Jersey doubled money for such grants in January and California’s governor is upping his spending request to $15 million — from $500,000 — for increased security at nonprofit organizations at higher risk of hate crimes. Congressional Republican leaders call on the House to pass bi-partisan anti-BDS legislation that passed in the senate with 77 votes. “… [BDS] is an effort to weaponize grievance politics and attack Israel’s sovereignty under the guise of defending the Palestinian cause. BDS’s real aim is to exclude, isolate and delegitimize Israel…and echoes a long, dark history of anti-Semitic boycotts visited upon the Jewish people since well before the establishment of the modern state of Israel.” Read More.

The bipartisan resolutions would put Congress on the record in opposition to the BDS movement and all efforts to delegitimize the Jewish state. The resolutions reiterate support for direct negotiations, not boycotts and other coercive measures. The resolution supports efforts to counter boycotts through enhanced government-wide U.S.-Israel scientific and technological cooperation. These bills come on the heels of the German Parliament approving legislation designating the BDS movement as anti-Semitic.

There were 433 Holocaust survivors killed by Palestinians and Jordanians violently opposing the creation of a safe haven for Jews in what had historically and spiritually been their homeland. A man wielding a large knife approached the secretary of the Jewish community of Helsingborg, Sweden, from the back and delivered near-fatal stab wounds to her upper body. Southern Sweden, where Helsingborg is located, has a disproportionate anti-Semitism problem, in which the region’s 1,200 Jews encounter dozens of hate crimes annually – figures that rival the anti-Jewish hate crime statistics recorded in Stockholm, where most of Sweden’s approximately 20,000 Jews live. Police are investigating allegations of anti-Semitic abuse and assault in broad daylight near St John’s Wood synagogue in London. According to Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, the victim, a Jewish father walking home after shul with his two sons, was kicked in the back by an assailant on Grove End Road opposite the synagogue. The European Union will conduct an examination of new Palestinian school textbooks following a study that found them to be more radical than in the past and containing incitement to violence against Jews and rejection of peace with Israel. The development comes after the European Parliament passed legislation geared to prevent hateful content in Palestinian textbooks. In October the parliament’s budgetary committee recommended freezing more than $17 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority over incitement against Israel in its textbooks. Read Here.

An assistant of the general-secretary of France’s far-right National Rally party was photographed grimacing while dressed as an Orthodox Jew and extending claw-like fingers. Labeled by the French media as an “anti-Semitic caricature,” the image from 2013 of Guillaume Pradoura, which surfaced in social networks this week, exposed the party to fresh criticism of anti-Semitism in its ranks. Parts of a text commemorating the murder of Jewish children in the Holocaust were painted over, as if redacted, at a newly opened memorial park for victims of the genocide in Paris. Among the sentences painted over was an assertion that victims were “killed in terrible and cruel conditions” as well as the words “extermination” and that the Nazis wanted to “annihilate” Jews. Despite years of anti-Semitism and the glorification of anti-Semitic national figures, Ukrainian Jews are cautiously optimistic about the election of Jewish actor Vlodymyr Zelensky as President. The Ukraine is now the only country besides Israel to have both a Jewish President and Prime Minister. Read Here.

93-year-old Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir does not deny his longstanding hostility towards Jews and Israel. In his book, Mahathir wrote “the Jews are not merely hook-nosed but understand money instinctively.” Relying on these two historic tropes of anti-Semitism, he also has asserted that “anti-Semitic is a term invented to prevent people from criticizing the Jews for doing wrong things.” Mahathir implied that the methods used by the Nazis could serve as an example of what could be done (again) to counter “the Jewish threat.” Just this month the U.S. special envoy for monitoring and combating anti-Semitism, Elan Carr, said that the United States may review its ties with countries it deems to be anti-Israel. A far-left Labour activist who delivered an anti- Semitic tirade at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in central London last weekend is to provide training on Jew-hate to Labour members at an official party event later this month. Addressing the rally, Glyn Secker described the Jewish Labour Movement as a “fifth column”, referred to “Jews in the gutter with these rats” and said, “Jewish leaders are turning a blind eye to the extreme right”. Jack Renshaw, the former spokesman for National Action, a neo-Nazi terrorist group, has been sentenced to life in prison over his plot to kill his MP, Rosie Cooper. In sentencing Mr Renshaw, Justice McGowan said that: “Your perverted view of history and current politics has caused you to believe it right to demonise groups simply because they are different from you. This is a case in which only a sentence of life imprisonment can meet the appalling seriousness of your offending.” Read Here.

The Palestinian terror group Hamas has officially thanked Jeremy Corbyn for his support. In a carefully worded statement, the militant organisation, whose armed wing is responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians, ‘saluted’ the Labour leader after he sent a message to a major anti-Israel rally in London last weekend. Bridget Prentice, a government whip and junior minister for 18 years as a Labour MP, hit out at a “Corbyn cult” and claimed the party had been destroyed. “It is with the deepest sadness and some anger that I resign from the party as it is presently formed as it no longer represents the values, aspirations or vision that led me to join it so many years ago. Over the past three years I have watched in horror as Jewish members have begged for support against the growth of anti-Semitism both within and out with the party. Read Here.

Roman Abramovich has said Chelsea is “open to all” as he voiced concerns over a rise in anti-Semitism. The billionaire Blues owner spoke of a “battle” against anti-Semitism and invoked the horrors of the Holocaust as a reminder of the atrocities that can result from a failure to tackle hate. Chelsea have seen challenges in tackling cases of anti-Semitism by fans and they have been praised for their efforts in eradicating the issue. Read Here.

The student government at Williams College, one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges, utilized two sets of criteria— one for a proposed pro-Israel group composed mostly of Jewish students, another for every other current and potential student group on campus. Often, debates about biased attitudes toward campus pro-Israel voices and the mistreatment of Jewish students raise ambiguous issues. This was not one of those cases. Read Here.

American universities have become whirlpools of downward mobility that target the people and the ideas that they once cherished and protected. It’s not just that the number of Jewish students in the Ivies are plummeting—Harvard’s class of 2020, for example, is only 6% Jewish. It’s that the universities themselves, responding to a host of larger cultural, social, and political trends, have divested themselves of the values and practices that have made them mighty engines of American intellectual and economic growth as well as a springboard for striving Americans, Jews and non-Jews alike. The government and Jewish student groups are urging universities to adopt an agreed definition of anti-Semitism to help tackle an upsurge in hate crimes on campus. Jewish students are frustrated at the slow pace of action at many universities, as well as cases where Jewish groups have been billed by universities for providing security for on-campus events. Chris Skidmore, the universities minister for England, said institutions should formally adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism – the same wording that caused controversy in the Labour party last year. In an open letter to fellow students who want to write about Israel and anti-Semitism, Ari Hoffman urges students to write with moral confidence about Israel, to stand up and step forward at a time of crisis and to play a role in encouraging others to action, both because the need on campus is acute and because on these issues there is increasingly little distance between the campus and the world outside it. During a guest lecture to a UCLA anthropology class, Arab and Muslim Ethnicities Professor Rabab Abdulhadi called Zionists white supremacists. A Jewish student in the class, Shayna Lavi raised her hand during the question-and-answer session and challenged Abdulhadi, saying she was “personally offended” that Abdulhadi “categorized pro-Israel students, Zionists and Jewish students as white supremacists.” Read Here.

The Jewish world is justifiably in an uproar about comments made by U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). Scholars and journalists have rebutted her revisionism by drawing attention to the pivotal role the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin Al-Husseini, played in Arab politics, to the Arab-Nazi alliance he spearheaded, and to the anti-Semitic propaganda he broadcast during the four years he enjoyed Hitler’s hospitality in Berlin. They have pointed out that the overwhelming majority of Palestinian Arabs were Nazi sympathizers; The Arab leadership led an anti-Semitic campaign within Palestine as early as the 1920s. Read Here.

Al Jazeera on Saturday removed an Arabic-language video that questioned Holocaust history, accused Jews of exploiting the massacres of their European communities in order to establish the State of Israel, and suggested that Zionism itself is derived from Nazi ideology. The seven-minute video, published on the network’s AJ+ channel Friday, drew sharp condemnation from the [Israeli] Foreign Ministry and the World Jewish Congress, which both denounced the video as promoting anti-Semitism in the Arab world. The deadliest attack on Jews in American history appears to have triggered a spike in anti-Semitic searches on Google. In the hours and days after 11 people were slaughtered inside the Tree of Life Synagogue and after the attack in Poway, so many people typed hateful language into Google that it produced the most anti-Semitic searches seen in the last 12 months. The analysis did not include benign searches for information about the news but users seeking material for “Jews must die,” “kill Jews,” and “I hate Jews,” among others, all of which were searched at alarmingly higher rates than normal. A white nationalist and neo-Nazi online forum received 80,000 responses from people in the UK, according to Prime Minister Theresa May as she says it is time to confront the growing threat from the far right. Her warning relates to information gathered during an analysis by the Home Office’s Office for Security and Counter Terrorism of extremist and harmful material appearing online. Read Here.

“The Times has long served as the “hometown paper of American Jewry… Amid a flurry of anti-Semitic controversies on the left, many Jews feel increasingly unwelcome in their traditional political home…Does the culture of The Times truly lend itself to anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist reporting and editorial coverage? …My organization wrote a letter to The Times…Now in crisis mode, newspaper officials…agreed to a meeting…In advance of the meeting, my organization reviewed 107 editorials on Israel and Jews published in The Times since 2016 and came away with the following observations…” Read Here.

Jewish leaders were in Ottawa for the World Jewish Congress’ annual Governing Board meeting, aimed at addressing the challenges facing the Jewish world, and to vote on a series of organizational policy decisions. The WJC board adopted several resolutions focusing on the rise in anti-Semitism including Neo-Nazi Marches, Anti-Semitism on University Campuses, and The Need for International Organizations to Prioritize the Fight Against Anti-Semitism. Elan Carr, called legislation in some European countries limiting the ritual slaughter of animals and circumcision of boys a “disgraceful forced expulsion” of Jews. Amid rising anti-Semitism, Carr said, “we have disgraceful pieces of legislation that ban shechitah, that are now contemplating banning brit milah. This is nothing but a forced expulsion of the Jewish community of the country that adopts such legislation. A forced expulsion. And it is intolerable.” Read Here.

Elan Carr warned about anti-Semitism from three different directions. “In Europe, we have a confluence of anti-Semitism, from ultra-right ethnic supremacist movements to the ultra-left anti-Israel, anti-Zionist movements, to radical Islam,” he said. “These are movements that should hate each other far more than they hate anything else, and yet they are united in this age-old sickness of humanity, anti-Semitism. “Anti-Semitism isn’t only about the Jews, [its] history’s greatest barometer of human misery, and a society that has imbibed its poison is rotten to the core.” Read Here.

The remains of 1,214 Jews murdered in the Holocaust were reburied in a mass grave in the city of Brest, Belarus after being found at a construction site in the city four months ago. Paul Packer, Chairman of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, presided over the ceremony: “As we remember those whose lives were taken here, we must also renew our commitment to never forget all the victims of the Holocaust, and to never again allow such evils to be committed against the Jews or any other people. The recently appointed commissioner to combat anti-Semitism in Germany’s most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia, joined the Israeli and American governments in calling for the Bank for Social Economy to close the account of an allegedly anti-Semitic pro-BDS group that is currently promoting a boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv. German lawmakers on Friday approved a resolution denouncing the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement against Israel, describing its methods as anti-Semitic and reminiscent of Nazi-era calls to boycott Jews. The Catholic Community speaks out against Farrakhan’s anti-Semitic church speech. “When he repeatedly smeared the Jewish people, using a combination of thinly veiled discriminatory rhetoric and outright slander, the only proper response from Fr. Pfleger would have been to pull the plug on the microphone and tell his friend that the show was over. A group of more than 200 evangelical faith leaders, organized by the Latin Coalition for Israel, gathered at the Aish Hatorah World Center in the Old City of Jerusalem to celebrate the one-year anniversaries of the American and Guatemalan embassies’ moves to Jerusalem and called upon others to do so and to fight the new anti-Semitism, manifested through anti-Zionism.
