Demonstrations in New York City on Thursday, coinciding with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, featured expressions of antisemitic hatred and incitement, displays of classical tropes demonizing Jews, anti-American rhetoric, and support for U.S.-designated terrorist groups, including the Yemen-based Houthis.
CAM’s Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) closely monitored the protests, and a sampling of the activities documented appears below.
The size, coordination, and unified messaging of the protests raise important questions: Who is funding and organizing them? Are foreign or state-linked actors involved?
These questions warrant an investigation and answers.
Last year, the ARC published an in-depth analysis of both novel and historically-repurposed symbols that have been co-opted and disseminated in the aftermath of the October 7th massacre to vilify the State of Israel and the Jewish people, and many of these symbols were visible on the streets of Manhattan yesterday.
Through the end of August, New York City had seen a 8% rise in antisemitic hate crimes this year, with offenses targeting Jews accounting for more than half the city’s overall hate crime total, NYPD data showed. Jews comprise approximately 10% of the city’s population.
Ahead of Netanyahu’s visit, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani — whose term in office that began in January corresponds with the recorded rise in antisemitic hate crimes — urged the arrest of the Israeli prime minister on an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant, slandering him as a “war criminal” and “architect of a horrific genocide of the Palestinian people.”
Thursday’s scenes from New York City were an inevitable consequence of such divisive and inflammatory leadership.
